Im not sure if this is where i should be posting this but since forever my power button on my pc didn't always work. I would have to give a firm slap on top of my computer and press the power button usually to get it to turn on, not sure why. The problem now though is it stopped working, i can't turn my pc on at all and i don't know why. I have the power switch connected to the right place but it still wont work. Im thinking i should buy a new cord if possible... the restart button cord just broke off but i only need the power button really.. im new to this computer stuff but should i just buy a new power/reset switch? and if so do i need a certain kind? or are all power switches the same?

The power switch basically just shorts the 2 pins the button is connected to on the motherboard when you press it. You can test if the switch is damaged by disconnecting it from the motherboard and then shorting the 2 pins it connects to with a conductive object (like a small screwdriver). If the system turns on when you do this then the switch is probably worn out or the cord is damaged. If the system still won't power on then there is another problem.

im confused, so i unplug the power switch from the motherboard, then get a screw driver and put it on the 2 pins? like you mean just touch the 2 pins with the screw driver? then try to turn it on or what? Also im so confused i got my computer to turn on 2x out of like 1000. How is that possible lol. The only thing i can think of is the cord is bad considering i had to hit my computer a couple times to get it to start so something was wrong from the start. How do i go about buying a new cord? i found an extra one but its different than what i need and i havn't found any similar to mine online. I was thinking of just buying a new case because mines to small but id rather not spend to much money if possible.

Sounds like the switch itself is bad, or the wires to the switch were not making a good connection. If there is no electrical connection between the power switch and the connection on the board, you can press the button forever and nothing will happen. If you had to hit the PC to get it to start (hitting anything in a PC is a ridiculous thing to do) obviously there is a problem with the connection. This is what Xaltar explained to you about starting the PC. Remove the two wires/connectors for the power switch, from their connections on the mother board. Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short those two pins on the board together. That's all you are supposed to do, nothing is done with the switch after you remove its wires from the board. The PC should start when you short the two pins with the screwdriver. If it does, you then know the power switch and/or wiring is bad. Depending upon your PC case, you may be able to just get the power switch/wires as one unit. Or the switch may be part of a group of buttons and connectors (USB, headphones, etc) that are one unit, which is what you would replace. |
