I have been having some problems these past few days and am unable to boot into Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. It could be due to a driver update. Unfortunately, I am unable to boot into Safe Mode. Also I am unable to do a System Restore. With that being said I plan to use Ubuntu to retrieve all of my files. I tried another route, by installing Windows 10 to another drive. However, I still was unable to access my Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe.
If I am able to use Ubuntu to retrieve all of my files once I get home I really want to make sure that I can avoid encountering this problem again. What is the ideal route for connecting my devices? First off, my motherboard is the ASRock Z97 Extreme6. I have a SIIG SC-SA0T11-S1 controller. I use the controller for a RAID 0 configuration of my 2 WD Green 3TB drives. I've also mountered a Toshiba 500GB Hybrid 2.5" drive and connected one other device. That device slips my mind right now. I have two optical drives, both connected to my ASMedia controller. I have 2 M.2 devices, one Samsung SM951 512GB AHCI and another Samsung 950 Pro 512GB NVMe. I have a Hyper M.2. x4 Mini controller. There are two M.2 slots on the mobo, but one is only Gen 2 so that is why I purchased this controller. I have 3 SSD and 5 mechanical HDD. All 3 SSD are connected to my Intel controller. SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 are open as they are shared with M2_2. 1 mechanical drive is connected to the SIIG controller, likely my WD Black 2TB. Another is likely connected to my ASMedia controller, a WD Blue 6TB. My other drive is likely connected to my Intel controller, a Seagate 4TB Hybrid. Now my real concern is whether the M2_1 is shared with any other slot as it is running my NVMe device. I don't want it to conflict with AHCI devices. I appreciate your help!

Another question is whether PCIE4 is shared with any of the other slots on the mobo. I'm considering running my Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe through my ASUS Hyper M.2 x4 Mini controller so that it will run cooler. I don't see anything in the manual suggesting that the slot is shared, but for all I know it very well could be.
Also I just got home and attempted to boot from Ubuntu running off my USB device, but it didn't load successfully. I want to be able to move files from my NVMe device to multiple devices including the RAID 0 and another drive. Is that possible? I am no Linux expert. Edit: I got Ubuntu to load, but it only listed drives aside from my NVMe device. Also it would not allow me to access any of them. I will instead attempt to install Windows to another drive that I have lying around and hopefully it will cooperate. I still would like answers to my questions in regards to the best way to connect my devices for cooling and stability avoiding conflicts. Edited by gniblack - 01 Jun 2016 at 2:14am |

Awesome news! Problem is just getting worse. Maybe my 950 Pro doesn't work? I hope not since that requires that I send it in to Samsung, and I have to deal with Fry's getting me a copy of my receipt by mail. They suck when it comes to giving you receipts that you need.
Anyway, I gave up and attempted to format and reinstall Windows to my device. Unfortunately, it hung at 0% during the file copying stage. Every time since then Windows doesn't see my device. I've tried installing to it in both of my available slots. Are these devices very heat sensitive? It sits right below the graphics card on the motherboard. That doesn't seem like the best spot. |

I am afraid I have nothing to offer by way of suggestions, aside maybe from trying the drive in another system.

Is it showing up in the UEFI?

Interestingly it appears in the UEFI, but it disappears by the time I can even select to install Windows to it. I've also installed Windows to another device, and the 950 Pro won't appear in Device Manager or Disk Management. Beyond that I've tried out my SM951 AHCI in the same slot, and it can be read. I don't know if it is an NVMe issue with the board (unlikely) or a dead 950 Pro.

Is your Windows 10 64bit a usb created image or an OEM/retail version?
If you're seeing it in the UEFI, then I would say it is powered and working. Disconnect all other drives except the 950 NVM,....does Windows install? On my system it never gets past 0% during the copy phase, after a few seconds it goes straight to install,...so wait a bit.

I made it so that it was the only device present. I have lots of storage devices (11) and 2 optical drives. In fact, for troubleshooting purposes I used a 12th storage device. I disconnected all of the other 10 storage devices and 2 optical drives, leaving only the NVMe present. Using the Windows 10 64-bit USB created image the NVMe device did not appear at all. Could it have anything to do with me not allowing it to get past the 0% during the copy phase? I'm pretty sure I waited minutes and not only seconds. I've worked, gone to school, slept, etc since so I forget the exact timeframe.
Any idea what I could do to make the Windows install detect it? I'm now thinking that maybe, just maybe, I can make Linux install to it. I have not tried actually installing Ubuntu to it. I've only tried using Ubuntu and then noticed that the device wasn't visible from within.

Re-download the Windows 10 usb creation tool and create a fresh windows 10 install. Do a custom install not an upgrade,...do you see the NVMe drive and can you select it?
If you can select it, click next,...does windows begin installing to it? The next thing you could try is to install windows to another drive and install the latest Samsung Magician to see if detects it.

I tried re-downloading the Windows 10 USB creation tool and creating a fresh Windows 10 install. I did a custom install, not an upgrade. The NVMe drive did not appear so it was unselectable.
I did not think to install Samsung Magician to another drive to see if it detects it though. This evening I'll attempt that.
