I received my ASRock motherboard and other components arriving over the weekend to start my build. Upon reviewing the instruction manual, if

M2 2_1 is used, then PCIe #1 is downgraded from PCIe 5.0x16 down to 5.0x8. or...

If I use M2 2_2 then my Gen5 M2 drive gets bumped down from Gen5x4 to Gen4x4 (128Gbs to 64Gbs).

Where will I see the biggest sacrifice on performance between scenario 1 vs. 2 above? some are saying scenario 2, but others say 5x8 (4x16) doesn't fully utilize the bandwidth of 5x16 and I'd see about a half second difference.

Components:
ASRock Taichi Lite Z790
Gigabyte 4080 Super (refresh of 4080)
Crucial T700 Gen5 1TB

Hi domerdel,

Thank you for your post.

This depand on your monitor, if your monitor is 4K, then the method 2 is better.
Under 4K resolution, RTX 4090 will get about 1-2% loss in the Gen4x8 mode (RTX40 series support PCIE 4.0 only). So I think RTX 4080 Super is less affected.
Performance loss is related to resolution. With the 1080P monitor, you will gets up to 15% performance drop.

All the best

Exciting build ahead! Both scenarios involve trade-offs, but it depends on your usage. If speed is crucial, sacrificing PCIe bandwidth might affect performance more noticeably come into https://photocall-tv.com/. However, if you're not pushing the limits, the difference might be minimal. Consider your priorities and usage to make the best decision.
