h170 pro4s mic input problem

Yesterday evening i found out that my front mic input picks up my front output, but not the voice.

First i thought its my headset, which i dropped on previous day - maybe it short-circuited or something. But no, it's not and in fact i found out that it does not even matter if any headset is connected.

Then i blamed drivers/settings and/or windows 10. Turns out settings are fine, driver reinstall does not help, and it is not the windows either - my linux install and several liveusb's show the same behavior.

And then i checked ports on a back panel. Mic port on the back receives nothing but static, all the time.

All in all it looks like mic input on my audio is busted. What is odd, is that: outputs work perfectly, both mic ports are detected by OS and mic connect/disconnect events work. Also no clue how it did happen - it all worked on previous evening, and between here and there pc have spent all time in suspend.

Im still going to go to local asrock service, but i have to ask: is there someone who have encountered  similiar problem before? Maybe there is something i've missed and the problem is not in hardware? (although i am 99.99% sure my mic input is kaput)

I would try powering off the system and removing the power from the wall for an hour or so. That should reset everything and force a power on self test when power is restored.

I can't tell from your description what worked when, or if you ever knew the microphone input worked. The first line of your post seems to say you never did, but later in your post you say it was working, but I can't tell.

No clue how it happened? Dropping the headset does not count as a potential cause?

How are you checking that a microphone input receives nothing but static all the time?

We have no idea what model headset you are using. I imagine it must have separate audio in  and microphone out connections, right? Your statement, "... my front mic input picks up my front output, but not the voice..." , makes me wonder about that.

That also makes me wonder if the front panel audio/microphone cable in your PC case is working correctly, or if it is connected to the board correctly.

Have you tested the microphone inputs with another microphone?

Sorry if i was unclear, i'll try to clarify (also some new information)

First of all, everything worked until thursday/friday. I know it for a fact, as i've used my pc normally for a month.

On thursday evening everything worked. Then at the end i accidentally pulled headset cord with my leg, and the headset fell. I did not immediately check if it worked, just picked it up and left it at that. 

24 hours later, at friday evening i found out, that my mic does not work.  It does not pickup what i speak, instead it picks up what i hear in headphones (music, system sounds, etc).

First i've checked mic parameters both in realtek manager and in standard windows control panel. I found nothing wrong. Then i've rebooted to linux and found out the same problem. Tries several other linux live usb's - same problem. So, it is not the OS, and not the configuration.

Then i checked back panel. Here headphones still work fine, and mic records static noise.

Then i tried physically disconnecting front panel HD audio cable from the motherboard. Still static on back panel mic.

I've recorded what exactly mic picks up from front panel, and it seems like some cross-talk between input and output channels (it's not exactly the sound i hear in headphones, just one channel present and it is somewhat silent).

Odd thing is that OS still sees both mic ports and detects connect/disconnect events for them just fine. Headphones also work fine.

Now for the scary part.

Knowing full well thart RMA'ing stuff will take up to a month, leaving me without PC, yesterday i went and bought a different motherboard (with intent to send the old one for diagnostics/repair).
I've installed this new board, connected my head set to the front panel and...got the same thing. Went to the back panel - same.

I went to my friend and took his usb sound card for testing. I put my headset into it and got the same effect.

Still unsure if it is just headset dead or i just fried the second mother board, this morning i went and got myself new cheap headset for testing.

I put it to back panel first. It seems to work - no cross talk, voice is recorded.
I put it to front panel then - it cross talks. Then after a minute mic fills with heavy noise. I put it back at the back panel - only noise now.

So, it looks like my pc case front panel kills headsets. And probably motherboards - im still not sure.
