According to the official CPU support page (http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68C-GS4%20FX/?cat=CPU) the N68C-GS4 FX supports a maximum of the AMD FX 4300 (95w).

After doing some searching I've seen claims from people who state they are running the same motherboard with the FX 6300 and even the 8300.  These cpus are 95w (like the 4300) but are not listed on the official compatibility page.  Claims are made that they will(may?) work if you have the latest bios installed.

Of course it would be recommended to only use CPUs on the official compatibility chart, but is it actually possible to run the FX 6300/8300?

Thank you!

Let's consider the processors you mentioned, the FX-4300, FX-6300, and FX-8300.

They are all rated at a TDP of 95 Watts. All have the same maximum operating temperature (70.5C.)

They are all 32nm, all Piledriver micro architecture, all Vishera cores.

Their Turbo clock speed is within 200MHz of each other. Their base frequencies are 3800, 3500, and 3300 respectively.

The FX-4300 has four cores, the FX-6300 has six cores, and the FX-8300 has eight cores.

One more time, they are all rated at a TDP of 95 Watts.

So otherwise identical processors, with 50% and 100% more cores, have the same TDP? Confused

Yes, the base speed is lower for the six and eight core models. What happens if we OC? Or simply run at the Turbo speed all the time?

A four core and an eight core processor, identical in all other ways, both running at their Turbo speed on all cores, will still have a TDP of 95W? You know what the answer to that is.

What about power usage, which is not TDP. How does an eight core processor use the same power as a four core processor, of identical architecture/generation? Right, it can't. But who cares, this is AMD, we can do whatever we want!

This board has a three phase VRM, with no heat sink. Ouch Yes, let's put an eight core CPU that we can OC on it! No problem! Shocked

Is it possible you ask? It should be. Should you do it? You tell me?
