So instead of going out and getting a 9590 + Liquid setup, with Zen coming out I opted the cheaper route of an 8320e as an upgrade for my 6300 990 fx xt6 setup....was all set to order through amazon when I discovered a store ...geographically sorta close....to me. Not only did they have it $20 cheaper but are running a special mobo combo deal which result in some all but free...after rebate. I figured id stick with Asrock and grabbed the 970a board , for little more than just the cpu from amazon/newegg .
To the point of the post...any reason to not just put the 8320e on the 970 or should I swap it onto the 990....anything it does way better / noticeably so...? |

Toss up.
That particular MB would be fine running the 95w 8320E or even some of the 125w Fx's for that matter. Yet, the 970 chipset was out before the AM3+ FX's and as such don't fully support the FX silicon. Looking at your Sig just now if the 990FX board is built and running, heck yea, put that 8320E on the 970. I assume you'll disassemble the 8320E/970 when Ryzen(new Zen naming) shows up for sale and build the Ryzen/X370 in it's place? My 2cents on it anyways. |

Kool thanks , yea that's the route I'm planning. Well aside from disassembling as I'm guessing none of it will be any good for the ryzen system, Curious tho....you mention the 970 not fully supporting the FX chips but this one says its supports up to the 220w 9370 and 9590 chip, as well as having usb 3.1 that the extreme 6 doesn't....probably unrelated just made me curious is all

I don't know as if I'd put those 220w CPU's in there yet the 125w one, sure.
Marketing mumbo jumbo. They supposedly can support that wattage, but still, the 970 chipset was released way way before the 990FX that officially supports the AM3+ FX instructions. And this particular 970 board you have may (edit from here to periods) keep up with a 220w'er but it won't leave much headroom for OC'ing.. Hell, at least it's 8+1, unlike most 970's 4+1. Then too, it has some beefy looking heatsinks to help cool the VRMs down whereas most 970s don't. It IS a nice board, as far as 970 boards go. Edited by wardog - 17 Dec 2016 at 9:06pm |

Ryzen is NOT a flop. Trust me on this Depends. If you only plan to have two systems after Jan's release of Ryzen I myself wouldn't disassemble my 6300/990FX. Those two "belong' together. The 8320E, at 95w, will offer you headroom to OC on this 970 board. As I said, as far as 970 boards go it's a winner. Unlike the "usual' 970 boards with 4+1 and no heatsinks. At least this 970 you won't have to start from the get-go with having a fan blowing over the VRM section(assuming good case airflow) |

All up and mostly running okay with but one disappointment so far.
I was reading the spec sheets on both and the only two things that seemed diff between them was the FSB 2400 vs 2600 and the amount the ram could be OC'd 2400 vs 2450,but then the *lower end* board gets usb 3.1 and the thing that caught my eye was the M.2 slot being gen2x4 vs the 990's gen2x2. Assuming the FSB and ram oc caps are kinda connected and probably the main *difference* between the 970 and 990 chipset and the usb and m.2 being just a ...date of manufacture / available tech atm thing? Unfortunately my ocz rd400 M.2 drive disappears after a shutdown... restarts after installing it and the ocz software didn't effect it I ran a benchmark that came out as it should , 1.5~ish gig read lil over 1 gig write.Downloaded a game onto it, well over an hour, played the game for a few min . Logged off did a few other things then shut it down for the night, next morning it was gone. Now I'm guessing it's the drive as it also happened in a very similar way when I put it into the 990 via an AiC. Two other differences ive noticed the Bios on the 970 is the same P1.20 that my 990 came with, but the 990 had an update to P1.40 that is not an available choice for the 970, P1.40 says it adds usb stability, M.2 support and NVMe support...that part is a little confusing , faster slot but not/less supported? Other thing that caught my eye was in the AXTu ui...on the 990 I have an intelligent energy saver option where it will switch to 4 phase power...not an option when loaded onto the 970. |

The UEFI/BIOS version number is only meaningful for a particular board, the version number is not related in any way between mother board models. So the UEFI/BIOS 1.20 versions are not related between the two boards. IMO, it is strange the 970A-G/3.1 specs don't mention NVMe support. Yes it is a newer model of board than the 990FX Extreme6 is, ignoring the release dates of their chipsets, but the latest Intel chipset board specs state that NVMe drives are supported as OS drives. The 970A-G/3.1 specs don't say NVMe drives are supported as OS drives, with the same release date as the 990FX Extreme6 1.40 UEFI/BIOS. I assume the 970A-G/3.1 has NVMe support, which is required for their use as the OS drive. You're saying the OCZ RD400 only disappears after a shutdown, but not a restart? Do you remove power from the PC when you shut it down? How do you get it recognized again? Is the RD400 no longer listed in the boot order? Is it still seen in the System Browser tool after a shutdown? I don't understand what you mean by the OCZ software did not affect it. Is that the OCZ NVMe driver, or the SSD Tool? An NVMe driver is required by this type of SSD. What version of Windows are you using? Also, the RD400 disappears in the 990FX Extreme6 too? |

Yes it also disappeared from the 990 board, gone from windows and uefi system browser. Did not remove power just shutdown, and it never reappeared on the 990 board again ,left it on the card in the system for a week...several shutdown and restarts no change.
Just meant that after installing the software tool it showed there on the tool like it should I was able to run a benchmark on it and all seemed fine, said it was 100pct healthy etc. However....because I only had a 120g ssd due to the rd400 disappearing I decided to throw in another ssd .As it was booting up a cpl messages appear saying my computer had probs and was being repaired , this is while the ASROCK logo and the spinning thing are happeneing , it did its thing and now its back......for now |
