I've bought a J4205ITX motherboard because it supports Ubuntu 16.10 but It doesn't load GRUB-EFI if the CSM module is disabled. The boot loader shows the EFI partitions but when you choose it you get a blank screen. You get the same results booting the Ubuntu instalation in a Kingston SSD connected to SATA3 port or the USB made with Rufus (GPT, FAT32, ISO Ubuntu16.10 AMD 64 bits image).I've tried in USB 3.0 and 2.0 porte. The problem seems to be that it freezes before showing the GRUB loader. You can test it with the USB image you get from Rufus. Could it be related to he Intel HD 505 graphics?

Using Rufus may be part of your problem. I never use it, the default formatting of USB flash drives is fine, at least for installing Windows in UEFI booting (EFI boot loader) mode. The resulting formatting of the OS drive is perfect, GPT and four partitions, for Windows. I assume you installed Ubuntu from a USB flash drive? If so, did you check the entry in the boot order for the USB flash drive? You must select the entry that is, "UEFI: <flash drive name>", in order for the EFI boot loader to be used, even if CSM is disabled. When you installed Ubuntu, did you only have the target OS drive installed in the PC? No other drives connected and powered up? The Intel integrated graphics VBIOS, which is part of the UEFI/BIOS for your board, has supported the UEFI GOP video standard since the Sandy Bridge processor generation. Support for the GOP protocol is necessary for UEFI booting, which many older video cards do not, and cannot support. ASRock has always included the appropriate EFI compatible VBIOS for the Intel graphics, in the UEFI/BIOS for their current and earlier boards, if possible. If the Intel HD 505 graphics VBIOS (sourced from Intel) did not support GOP, then including the CSM option in the UEFI would be a mistake. I can't believe Intel would not support GOP on one of their latest products, the J4205 processor. The specs for the J4205 include support for Secure Boot, which when enabled will automatically disable CSM. Given that, the HD 505 graphics must support GOP. |

Thank you for your answer.
I explained how I made the USB flash stick in order to make it reproducible. I think it is not part of the problem because I'm able to boot it in UEFI Mode in other computer for example Acer Aspire E5-571 Bios version 1.04 Furthermore I also tested images made with unetbootin and dd and the result is the same. It crashes before grup-efi was shown. I confirm that when I choosed "UEFI: USB flash Drive" I get a blank screen and nothing happens". At this point I activated the CSM module and I choosed the new device without "UEFI:" and I was able to boot it. Once intalled Ubuntu 16.10 on the SSD drive the problem is the same if CSM is disabled I can't boot the device "UEFI:SSD Kingston", the only way to boot it is activating the CSM module and choose the device not labeled as UEFI:.. Mostrando of the time I'm managing the boot order with F11. I'm quite sure I'm choosing the right device. I Will add some images later. |

Thank you for your answer. I've read this link before post it.
I'm in the third case, Ubuntu is the only OS in the system, but I'm not agree with the part saying that it doesn't matter installing in CSM or UEFI Mode. I want to install it in UEFI Mode for better performance and future compatibility with other OS. I confirm I've checked the 6 prÃncipes: 1 I've a 64 bit image 2 I've disabled the secure boot, fast boot 3 The image is right. I'm able to ser the GRUB-EFI loader in other computer |

I'm not at home tonight, tomorrow I Will post it, but I tried to upgrade it through the UEFI utility and it said that there wasn't upgrade. More information. Today I've tried to boot it with an Ubuntu image made with their recovry disk tool. The result still being the same. Furthermore I'm not the only want who has this problem: https://www.google.es/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://tapatalk.com/topic/68622-freenas-community/47117-no-boot-with-asrock-j4205-itx&ved=0ahUKEwiFx6a60pzRAhXDchQKHVqADnQQFgggMAE&usg=AFQjCNErqY01ASp29-Tm_Pa_xQ73dqedOg https://www.google.es/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.technikaffe.de/anleitung-394-asrock_j4205_itx_im_test__apollo_lake_mit_hdmi_2.0_und_hevc_10bit&ved=0ahUKEwiFx6a60pzRAhXDchQKHVqADnQQFgg_MAg&usg=AFQjCNEXfFmlmGPgNQXzI6xWcyBlfZN8cA https://www.google.es/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://androidpc.es/blog/2016/12/05/review-asrock-j4205-itx-j3455-itx/&ved=0ahUKEwjWqqDA05zRAhVLbRQKHeUHAj0QFggiMAI&usg=AFQjCNF_yxaVDu6WRjm3W7PALLgoet4qQw |

I believe you are choosing the correct entry in the Boot Order, that is not difficult.
Try this: With CSM set to Enabled, set the CSM sub-option Launch Storage OpROM Policy to UEFI Only. That should cause the use of the EFI boot loader, but will not be a complete UEFI boot, meaning no need for GOP support. You always must Save and Exit the UEFI/BIOS before that setting is applied. After the Save and Exit, go back into the UEFI and select the UEFI entry for Ubuntu. If you can boot Windows in UEFI mode, with CSM disabled, using the HD 505 graphics, that means the VBIOS in the UEFI supports GOP. That means it should work for Ubuntu too. |
