Z270 Taichi for NAS and SATA Express ports

Hello,

I'm currently building a NAS and am going to use a Z270 Taichi motherboard for it because of the 10 SATA ports.

While I understand that installing any M.2 SSD comes at the cost of one or more SATA ports, I was wondering if I can replace the lost SATAs with the SATA Express connectors.

My question is basically, what are those SATAe ports connected to? I can't find any information in the manual or after googling for an answer for a while. Can I use them to connect regular SATA HDDs to them, making the effective SATA connections 12 or do they also come with an either or type of deal? 

Are they even supported? In the manual and on the website it says that support to be announced.

I'm considering installing a SATA type M.2 in the top slot and can accept the loss of 1 SATA port, but it would be really cool if I can replace that lost port with one of the SATAe ones.

Don't know about the eSata port - but, you are aware that it's only sata m.2 drives that disable port 0 right? PCIE based m.2 drives aka nvme storage does not.

This board does not have any eSATA ports. I think you are referring to the SATA Express connections on the board.

SATA Express is an interface that uses two Intel SATA III ports, and another small connector next to the pair of SATA III ports. SATA Express is a dead interface, not one drive that uses it exists. The extra smaller connector is worthless for anything else.

Yes! I am talking about exactly those two small connectors. My confusion. I'll correct the title accordingly.

After reading up a little on how SATA express works, it's become clear to me that it actually uses a large connector that takes up all the ports. So I can't really use the small port that is present. 

Surprisingly the SATA express ports appear extra inside de BIOS and that's why I thought I could maybe get 2 additional SATA drives out of it.

The small extra port is used to supply two PCIe lanes to the SATA Express interface, so it's not a SATA port. It's worthless for any other use besides a SATA Express connection.

The SATA Express ports shown in the UEFI/BIOS would simply show any SATA Express drives connected to the board.
