So I'm trying to get my Asrock 970m pro3 to boot from an Adpatec 6405E.  I've tried playing with all the settings in the bios but I can't seem to get the magic combination for the motherboard to recognize and load the bios from the Adaptec RAID controller.  The RAID card seems to load all the LEDs but it's like the motherboard just ignores it and I need it to load the Adaptec BIOS.

Has anyone been successful with this?

Is the 6405E flashed to the latest BIOS?

Odds are the cards BIOS needs to be UEFI compatible to function properly.

Or, have you checked if the card is cross-flashable?

The following Adaptec controllers are UEFI-compliant:
Series 8 ??Adaptec RAID 8405, 8885, 8805, 8885Q, 81605Z, 81605ZQ
Series 7 ??Adaptec RAID 7805, 71605, 71685, 72405, 7805Q, 71605Q, 71605E
Series 7H and 6H - 71605H, 70165H, 7805H, 7085H, 71605He, 70165He, 6805H, 6405H
Series 6, 6E, 6Q, and 6T (6405, 6445, 6805, 6405E, 6805E, 6405T, 6805T, 6805Q, 6805TQ) using firmware/BIOS Ver. 5.2.0 Build 19109 (or later)

All other Adaptec products cannot be used in motherboards or systems that are designed to support UEFI booting only. These systems won't boot at all with a non-UEFI compliant Adaptec product installed.

Hmm, when I run the update utility in dos it says unable to locate controller.  Also when I go to tools and system explorer in the UEFI bios it says the slot is empty, even though the LEDs are all on and stuff on the card.  Hmm...  I've tried moving it to a slot I know that works because I had an Intel NIC in it and it detected it, but still it says the slot is empty with the 6405E.  I'm starting to think this 6405E is bad...

Yea. Afraid of that. Not found.

I used to keep an old NON-UEFI motherboard around the shop to flash cards that at that time didn't have a UEFI compatible BIOS.

And that's my only suggestion to you now. Resurrect an old MB you might have in a closet there.

Or a computer shop or friend with one.

Hmm, I think I built my dad's computer years back without a UEFI motherboard.  I don't have any around here anymore that aren't UEFI, so I guess it's time to go visit the pops. :)

Yea, sorry. But you'll need to do at least that much to get it recognized on a UEFI board.

Let me know how it goes. I've done 100's while upgrading Client systems.

Well I verified the card works fine in my dad's computer with a regular BIOS and updated the adaptec card to the latest BIOS and stuck it back on the 970M Pro3 and no joy.  Both motherboard and Adaptec on latest BIOS. :(

Ugh, well it turns out I had a bad Adaptec card.  It seemed kinda wonky in my dad's computer even.  I got a new 6405E card from Amazon and it has no problem booting up on my ASRock board, even with an older BIOS, and it let me update the BIOS on my 970M pro3, so it's all good now.
