Hello people,
I?™m building a new gaming PC and everything works perfectly fine except that the MOBO refuses to recognise 3 different SATA 3 HDD! I Have one M2 drive that works perfectly, I read the documentation and now that it shares some lanes with two other sata ports so I didn?™t try the drives there. When I just booted the computer for the first time It shows one of the drives (4TB Western digital black) but I rejiggled the connections and that too stopped showing up??The two other drives are 3TB WD red NAS versions ??all new. I tried everything, different sata ports, different sata cables, plugging only one of the drives, updating the bios, connecting only one drive to the sata powerline from the psu (had all three connected to one line, very elegant build??/p> I can?™t believe 3 new HDD would all be faulty, but if that?™s not the case than the only logical conclusion is that the mobo Sata connections are faulty but the SSD works perfectly... I can hear the drives spinning (a soft ?˜grinding noise??at boot, I guess it?™s looking for an OS) ??and I?™d hate to RAM the mobo after everything is properly installed. Otherwise everything is fine, I stress tested the CPU and GPU and temps are great and everything is stable??/p> Didn?™t have a chance to check those drives in a diferent system or an external sata to usb dock.. Any ideas are welcome, thank you! Specs: Intel Core i7 8700K ASRock Z370 Extreme4 motherboard 16GB Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum1 |

If you remove the M.2 drive/s from the system, do the SATA HDDs detect then?
I would try pulling all the drives from the system then clearing CMOS using this method: http://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=630&title=how-to-clear-cmos-via-battery-removal Reconnect only one SATA drive and see if it is detected, if so, add the next SATA drive etc. If all SATA drives detect then try installing the M.2 drive. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Mate,
Incidentally I managed to update the bios to 1.2 and now one drive (connected to the 'other' SATA controller) is showing up... I'll give your suggestion a go, but I don't like to have to worry in the future if any additional drives will work or not... One question, I think the manual suggests that one M2 port (SATA_0?) is faster than the other so it's better for boot drives, Is this correct? I'm getting fantastic speeds on my Samsung 960 Evo currently. Thank you!

It is located next to the front panel audio header. Looking at the board with the IO panel at the top left the CLRCMOS jumper pins are on the bottom left, near the plastic "Armor", to the right of the front panel audio header.

I'm afraid it sounds that way.
One last thing to check, make sure there are no bent pins in the CPU socket and there is no debris or damage on the CPU. One pin not making proper contact can cause all kinds of issues. It wouldn't hurt to double check all the power connectors on the board/PSU while you are at it. If one of them is poorly seated it could cause issues. If you really want to be thorough you can also try another PSU, if there is a bad rail on the one you are using it could also cause IO issues. If none of that helps then I would go ahead with an RMA. Issues like this are very rare but they can happen.

Thanks mate,
very frustrating, this was my first and probably last ASRock. I doubt there are any bent pins or power issues, since I was able to use the M2 drive I installed a few games on it ran prime with no problems and it all worked rather well, other than the issue with the sata drives... Returning a Mobo is the worst, you have to dismantle the whole system, remove the cpu (clean it from thermal paste)...

ASRock make very solid boards, it's unfortunate that your first gave you issues. Sadly this sometimes happens, every now and again a bad board ends up on in a store, be it due to a defect or damage in transit. Bare in mind that a lot of the time, when issues like this occur, people find their way to these forums. We don't see too many, maybe 3 since I became a moderator here. Most issues we see are either UEFI related or turn out to be caused by other hardware, most commonly bad PSUs.
ASRock tends to be very good with replacements, personally, even prior to my being a moderator, I have never had any issues with them. All that said, I do understand. I have been in this field for a very long time and know how easy it is to lose faith in a brand/product. All I can say is that this is not a common issue and that you were very unfortunate. As to M.2 working and SATA not, it could be pin related. PCIe lanes provided by the CPU must naturally be connected to the board, so if some are working and others not then devices/sockets that use them may not function correctly. I don't think this is the case in your situation, more of an FYI (for your interest). Seeing as you have to dismantle the system for RMA anyway, I strongly recommend you check the CPU carefully for any thermal paste, debris or damage on the contact pads. I would hate to see you back here with a replacement and the same issue because you sent back the wrong component. I don't think it's likely but it doesn't hurt to be careful ![]() Whatever brand you decide to go with, good luck and enjoy your new build once you get it all sorted
