I recently built a ryzen pc. specs are
asrock ab350m pro4 ryzen 1500x 16gb trident z rgb 3000mhz running at 2800 evga gtx 1060 6gb sc wd black m.2 pcie 256gb firecuda 1tb hybrid drive samsung 960 evo 250gb Ok so i bought the wd black as a boot drive and the firecuda as a storage drive but the motherboard wouldnt recognize the m.2 whether i plugged it into the m.2 ultra or the sata m.2 slot. It warms up so its getting power, the mb just wont read it. Anyway, i installed windows on the hybrid drive while i figure out whats wrong. Tried everything i could, updated bios to 3.30 then 4.10 nothing with either. Tried disabling csm and unplugging the hybrid. Made sure the boot usb was uefi. Nothing. Tried looking for drivers but windows 10 supports it natively. So i figured i got a bad ssd. and so yesterday i decided to buy a samsung 960 evo. Every motherbaord pretty much supports it. Same problems as the wd black. So my question is, is there a way to force the mb to locate the m.2 drive? Neither m.2 ports seem to show anything. And yes i made sure nothing is plugged into the sata ports. Im telling you i tried everything i could find online lol

SSD should be directly visible in UEFI (under BOOT or something). If it's not, then the problem is deeper.
Some 960 EVO drives had compatibility issues with older drive FW (not mobo FW) versions. I see many people in this forum are running the 960 EVO. P.S. it's ANOTHER AB350M with issues. I highly encourage you to open an official ticket with ASRock and probably RMA the mobo. Just take a look in here, every 3rd topic is about the AB350M... |

Did you follow these instructions (Method 1)?
http://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1236 Note also this part: "Do NOT be worried if your PCIe SSD is not listed in the Storage Configuration screen or Boot order list. That does not matter at all." Also, use the M.2 Ultra slot for the Samsung. The other M.2 slot uses a SATA lane. Edited by PetrolHead - 17 Dec 2017 at 11:23pm |

the links returns 404.
How on Earth a device not visible in the boot order is OK? If so, how can one tell the mobo to boot from a given device? More so, if you have the 2 M2 slots both occupied, how can you boot from the one you want? |

Same here. Odd. There shouldn't be anything wrong with url. In any case, you'll find the text on this forum under Technical Support > Intel Motherboards. It should be at the top of the forum topic list. Even though it's for Intel, I was able to follow the same instructions on my AB350M Pro4 (BIOS 3.3). However, I did see my Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB SSD in the boot order list on my system.
This is before Windows is installed on the drive. At that point you're not trying to boot from the SSD, you're trying to boot from the Windows installation media. After Windows is installed, the SSD should appear in the boot order list as "Windows Bootloader" or something similar. I have no idea how bad a sign it is that you are unable to see the drive in the BIOS even though I did, but I think your main concern should be whether Windows finds the drive or not. P.S. The instructions also state that it's good to have only the NVMe drive plugged in when you're installing Windows, so keep the hybrid unplugged while you're troubleshooting.
The other M.2 slot is for a SATA drive. If you have a SATA drive that uses an M.2 slot, then I don't see why it wouldn't appear in the boor order list. The Samsung 960 EVO probably is not a SATA drive, so you should only be able to use it with the M.2 Ultra slot. |

The 960 EVO comes only in NVMe flavors. If you hook it to SATA-only M2 it won't be recognized for sure. NVMe is a logical controller interface, not a form factor.
Drives should always be visible in the boot order. When there, mobos can then start the boot procedure from the respective 'sectors' on the chosen drive. If a mobo has a blank boot order, then how could it 'pass' the boot to any device? Maybe some mobos try and see if a given medium is bootable, and if so, put it in the list. I could swear however that I've plugged many USB flash drives and I've seen them offered as a boot option in many mobos, esp. laptop ones. |
