    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 at 3:45pm
I have x299 Taichi with 7820x. Everything was running fine, but after updating Samsung 960 EVO 1TB firmware my PC won't power on. PSU is Seasoning PRIME 860W.

Firmware update (through Samsung Magician) did a shutdown. After that no longer powers on. On motherboard just the led around chipset cover is illuminated.

Tried unplugging, CMOS reset, removed bios battery, removed the M.2 SSD, tried different powercord. Still won't post. Tried hard jumping using pwr pins on motherboard, so it's not a power button issue.

Instead of the M.2 SSD firmware update, it could have been some windows update also that is causing this. I usually keep my PC powered for weeks. Even then I usually just reset it. Last time I did shut down could have been months ago.

Could someone advice me how to proceed.

Dr. Debbug shows nothing. LCD display is not powered. Removing 8 pin connector shows nothing on Dr. Debbug display.

PSU is powered from 1500VA UPS. Tried without UPS. No difference.
Bios version was 1.60.

I'm wondering, can SSD firmware update brick motherboard? Update itself took few seconds and didn't show any errors.

Noticed another thread with similar issue. I'm leaving the link here:

Admin can combine these threads. Seems our problem is similar. Tried everything suggested in other thread.

Another update. Cleared CMOS (unplugged, removed battery) and let it sat for few hours. After that it booted. Dr. Debug showed d6 and then A2. Also the little BIOS led near Dr. Debug was glowing. M.2, GPU were removed.

Installed M.2 and GPU, tried to power up but nothing. LED are glowing around chipset cover, but Dr. Debbug shows nothing.

System setup:
GPU (GTX 1080) is in PCIE1
Soundcard (STX II) is in PCIE4
M.2 SSD (Samsung 960 EVO) is in M2_3 (boot drive)
SSD-s (2x) are in SATA3_0_1
HDD-s (4x) are in SATA3_2_3 and SATA3_4_5

System sat overnight. Removed Samsung M.2 and it powered up. Flashed BIOS to latest 1.70. After BIOS flash finished, system shut down and won't power back on.

So removing M.2 didn't help. Should receive new Taichi XE today. Going to try with a new board and M.2 with older firmware.

Another update. Let it sat again for few hours (cleared CMOS). Powered it up and managed to enter BIOS. It showed 1.70 for firmware version.

Next it exited BIOS and system restarted. After restart it didn't POST and Dr. Debbug showed 32. ASRock Taichi manual says it's memory related, but doesn't specify. From here I read: 32 - CPU post-memory initialization is started.
System sat like that for 20 minutes. Then I shut it down myself by holding down the power button. Starting it again worked and it went to recovery options. From there I choose to continue to Windows. Right now everything is working as should.

Month and a half later, same problem. After shut down, won't boot / turn back on.

Since the last time, I have restarted my system few times and all has been well. Initially I tried shut down and it worked well. System booted up nicely. But basically I have never shut down since then, only few restarts.

Something strange is going on with Taichi boards.

Searching this forum I can find at least four similar threads. Only solution that seems to work (temporarily) is to clear CMOS via battery removal. But it's a temporary fix.

Any comments from AsRock what might be causing this?

Waited overnight (CMOS cleared) but still won't post. Last time waiting few hours helped.

Going to try with another Taichi XE motherboard.

So changed motherboard for a new Taichi XE. Connected everything and nothing, wont POST / power on (except the chipset led). Was so sure that it has to be motherboard.

Removed everything except CPU. Still same. On this motherboard chipset led is pulsating, not constantly lit (I think I changed it on previous motherboard, so it would be always lit).

Not sure it should POST without memory, so installed two sticks (C1, D1). And voila it posted. As I have four sticks, tought maybe its memory related. To be sure, tried to power it off / on again. Nothing. Now it wont post. Only the chipset led is flashing. Tried with one memory stick and alternate stick, but wont POST.

Another thing what I tried is powering motherboard just with a PSU. Only chipset led is pulsating.

Without memory / CPU, should DR Debug display show something? But in my case, Dr Debug is not lit.
