Got the computer built Following specs:
Motherboard: ASRock X370 Taichi CPU: AMD Ryzed 1800X Memory: (Still have not decided) A) 2X2X8 GB of G Skill FlareX F4-3200C14D-16GFX OR B) 2X2X8 GB of G Skill Ripjaws V F4-3466C16D-GVK (G Skill has tested the Flare X and ASRock has tested both the FlareX and the Ripjaw V) M.2 Samgsung Evo 960 500GB by PCIe 3 x4 (Primary Boot Drive) Corsair Hydro Series H115i Pro RGB USB Keyboard and Mouse Now I am off to load Win 7 Pro 64 bit through an optical drive but I have been reading that there are issues with USB keyboards and mouses (maybe - if loading through a USB stick) and USB Drivers. So what is the best BIOS for the MOBO? What is the best methodology of loading windows? What specifics do I need to know before I start this about any drivers, etc needed to load windows? What are the AGESA updates? |

DunGoneNuts, you should know that W10 1703 and above are the only OSs officially supported. Both AMD and ASRock have released SW for W7 and several users have great success with it. I would suggest you do some reading here about BIOS/UEFI versions. My passing readings says Beta 4.41. I don't know where you get a genuine copy of W7 since it is not for sale, but I assume you have that covered. I would suggest your best install method is to use Rufus ( https://rufus.akeo.ie/ ) to create a boot-able USB stick. Get chip set drivers here: https://support.amd.com/en-us/download and all other drivers from the manufacturer's sites not ASRock. Use Windows 7 USB Patcher if your mouse/KB are USB based - W7 has no USB drivers. Use Instant Flash via the BIOS/UEFI and always do an F9 and F10 before and after a flash. BIOS 4.41 requires a bridge BIOS. AGESA (Search it) is code from AMD built into BIOS/UEFI before ASRock releases it. Users get no choice - just comes with the BIOS/UEFI. Enjoy, John.

I will look at the W10 option. However, I have been told that W10 is not the best for Gaming and is still full of bugs. That along with loosing a lot of my legacy programs and legacy drivers for my older printers and such.
I have hundreds of dollars in programs that will run on Windows 7 but are not usable on Windows 10 as no patches exist for them. I also have programs that are secutiry keyed to Windows 7 and can not be upgraded to a Windows 10 machine. I have also been told that Windows 10 is a "Marketing Tracker" that automatically sends information to MS to be sold to vendors and that anything I store or type on my keyboard in Windows 10 will be accessible to MS. Some say this can be disabled but can it TRULY be disabled? I was pissed that I head and found out that ATT had tracking software on my phone that I could not disable. I fear that the same will happen in Windows 10. So any truth to this? The Key I have for Windows 7 is valid and genuine. Just because MS stopped selling the keys to distributors, does not mean there aren't 100,000 more valid keys out there being legally sold. This aside, from all the research I have done on Windows 10, it is worse than Windows 7 and should be referred to as Windows 8.2 |

Would VirtualBox running under Windows 10 be a way of allowing you to run your Windows 7-only applications? If it is then you could take it a step further and host it under Linux instead, then you won't have to face your fears regarding Windows 10. Officially ASRock doesn't support Linux either but that doesn't mean it won't run.

I do not know. I will have to study up on Virtual Box. I have look at Linux but do not know if that is a solution either.

DunGoneNuts, if you are going to consider VMs, then include Hyper-V. It is part of W10, but it runs only Windows. I can not really respond to your questions about W10 snooping. It is extensive. After installing W10, I open Settings and Disable all the privacy policies that default to Enabled. I also remove all the Apps that it will allow me to remove unless I think I may use it some day. One consideration is the system Task Scheduler. You can bet W10 has full knowledge of Ryzen/Threadripper and W7 does not. I would expect better scheduling to the architecture on W10. Enjoy, John.

I personally am going to stay with Win 7. I've heard some nasty things about Windows 10 snooping also. I have yet to read their terms of use, so I'm not positive yet. Several articles, mostly from about release time, had some bad things to say about their update practices, snooping and, invasion of privacy. So before I consider it, I'm going to have to do some research.
I can't help you with installing, except to say I had the same trouble. I lucked out in that the boot drive in my old system still had windows 7 installed. The problem I'm having is that Windows won't boot with My external drives connected. It's probably just some driver that hasn't been installed for the motherboard yet as My previous board worked fine. If you have Windows installed on your previous hard drive, maybe you can boot from that. Then maybe you can clone windows to your desired boot drive. Gus |

Odds are it is a driver conflict with your old MB. |

I have abandoned the use of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and decided to go to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit mainly because my ASRock MOBO is geared for use with Windows 10.
I will have to muddle through the hardware and software that may not be compatible with Windows 10. I already know that there are no drivers for my Deskjet 820 CSE HP Printer. I do not know if my HD Picture Printer Photosmart 475 will work under Windows 10. I am hoping that my HP Envy 5530 will work - it should because it is a network printer. I will also be loosing my M-Audio Delta Audiophile card that I use for making digital copies of my LP's that I have but this is due to no PCI slot on the motherboard and I do not know if they make a PCI to PCIe adapter so I can keep my card. The software I will be loosing is way too numerous to list because I can not find an upgrade for the software to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I keep hoping that I can keep some of it but I will not know until I do some further research on it. Mods can close this thread as I will be starting a new thread on the forum for my installation help for Windows 10 that will include my new hardware. I will list the hardware in the signature block as some of my previous desires and purchases have changed - for example, I have abandoned the Noctua NH-D15 for a Corsair H115i Pro AIO RGB cooling system. I also changed from a Thermaltake case to a Phanteks case. Thanks for your input and help. |
