You push down on the locking tab to unlock the GPU from the slot.

Thanks for the reply. Video Card is MSI GTX 1070 gaming. Case is Antec p8.
The motherboard tray thought, i just had a look, however i think motherboard standoffs have been the same height for 20 years that i recall, at least there must be some sort of standard there. At any rate i'm not discounting anything. Just a counter thought on that, and also the lock tab is on the front side of the motherboard and doesn't pass through the back. Perhaps some compression or pressure could be keeping the entire thing too tight though. I applied like near perfect pressure when i put the card in. It went in what felt like flawlessly, and while the sound was startling, i also felt like wow, that really popped in nicely. Until i tried to remove it, then i was like, Oh what? I've had to finagle a video card out before, but this one is really, really in there under that lock. As an aside, i've always hated those things. I'm not clear on what you mean by the GPU "tangs" speculation. Are you talking about the goldfingers? I did inspect them after i pulled the gpu from my other mobo and before i put it in as i tend to do, i inspect my ram the same. There were no issues with it. It really felt is that that lock tab just snapped over the insert tab on the card super tight. Like perhaps that piece, or the inner shape of it was perhaps slightly tighter than normal. As far as trying to relieve compression by pushing the video card in a bit, i did do that when trying to get it out. I tried all sort of finagling it. But i also was getting frustrated and decided to stop and just see if the system booted once i installed my OS before i spent a bunch of time getting frustrated for nothing. I guess having a go at it is the only avenue i have at the moment. Not feeling good about reefing on it after spending all that time money and effort and then possibly ending up with broke stuff while at least it's working atm. Thanks for the suggestions, i will still check those ideas out. Edited by MKVII - 28 Mar 2018 at 12:48pm |

What Case and what Video card ? Just so I can google some pics...
I think your problem may be the back panel of case fits too snug against the mobo or the vid card has bent tangs that slip into the back. If you could push the vid card hard toward the back (push from the front case side of vid card) you may be able to more easily push the PCIe lock tab down. If you can get the card out I would look at the bottom metal back panel tang's of the vid card and see if it/they has a slight bend, if so straighten before re-insterting the video card. |

Don't really know what to do about this, but i built a new machine this last weekend on z370 K6 and when i put my gpu in, the lock tab on the pci slot snapped down nice and tight - which after putting many gpus in over the years one could say that is a welcome change.
HOWEVER. It locked down so tight that i cannot get my gpu out.. Like at all. I think it's permanently locked in there and possibly the only way i will be able to get it out is to destroy the motherboard, or de-solder the pcie slot and work it off the gpu that way since it's nearly impossible to get a finger on it with the gpu installed against the motherboard like that. Decidedly in these times the gpu is worth a lot more than the motherboard, but it sucks knowing that if something should happen that i need to take it out, or want to upgrade my gpu, which i did plan on doing on this system sooner than later, and at least usually do at least once in the lifetime of a machine/platform on the same mobo that it is possibly unlikely i will be able to do that. So i don't know what to do really. I planned on keeping this system for a fairly long time, like 4-5 years at least, but not with the same gpu obviously. If i want to upgrade my gpu waiting even in one or two years by that time z370 motherboards will be basically only on the used market, and if i do in fact end up destroying it to get it out that would be my only option besides upgrading mobo and cpu again for a new platform. And i personally don't buy used PC boards in general gpu or mobo. At first i tried pushing that tab back with my fingers gently, and with more force, but still fairly carefully. I pushed and angled and tugged at it till i was mad enough i was yanking on it, up to even trying to push it down with a screwdriver almost not caring if i destroyed the mobo right then and there as i just wanted my gpu out at that point. I ended up just going ahead with it in before i got too mad, and seeing if the system booted and everything worked ect. Which it did, i'm not having any hardware related problems with it thus far. But i have still not even bothered doing my cable work ect and finishing my build. New case and all wires hanging out and doors off. ( i wanted to remove it after putting it in to change my cable routing ) So i could not even do that. Really kind of bummed out about this. It's kind of a weird situation to be in. If i destroy the board trying to take my gpu out, i doubt Asrock is going to honor a warranty at that point, or should they? IE build tolerances. I've never had one of those tabs lock down so hard. It actually made quite a loud snap when it locked in. I can barely see the tab, but i can see that the fleshy pcb tang from my gpu is Firmly locked in that little hole you can see through the back of the tab. I mostly don't want to do any damage to my gpu, but the motherboard either. Thoughts? |
