RAID: cannot remove a legacy non-array in AMD-RAID

System Configuration:
  • Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 2400G
  • Memory: 16GB DDR4 3200 G.SKILL Ripjaws V
  • VBIOS: P4.50
  • SSD: 2x Intel 545s 256GB
  • HDD: 2x WD Blue 2TB
  • OS: Windows 10 x64 (1709)
Steps that led me here:
  • put everything together
  • freak out briefly because EUFI (version P4.40) reports CPU temp of 120ºC ??search says this is likely a misapplied sensor (more later)
  • set RAID, create RAID-0 from SSDs, create RAID-1 from HDDs
  • install Win 10 1607 on RAID-0, using RAID driver from the CD that came with the mobo
  • install successful, HWMonitor reports 20-30º CPU (yay), but freezes on idle
  • Windows stops booting with an invalid media error. install disc doesn't give an opportunity to use external drivers for repair.
  • ok fine. I'll reinitialize the RAID. when I do so, one of the SSDs refuses to release its legacy status.
Troubleshooting:
  • reset BIOS ??no change to RAID settings
  • updated to P4.50 ??CPU temp correct now ??
  • reformatted every drive, plugged them into different ports, alone, with others ??only one drive has the issue.
  • that drive works fine in other machines, and in this one on AHCI
I'm trying right now to get RAIDxpert installed on a completely different drive, but Windows (1709 now) refuses to install the RAID drivers without the RAID, refuses to boot from USB, and refuses to boot from RAID without the drivers. ?˜±

I'm getting really close to just giving up, using the SSDs individually with software RAID-1 on the HDDs. any thoughts?
