I can't figure out how to get extra SATA cards to work with the board. I've tied two different cards and both are failing ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XI4OL82/ and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UNP05O ). Bios sometimes sees them, sometimes doesn't. Sometimes Ubuntu 18.04 will see the drives, but if it does they'll eventually error out and no longer be available. Both these cards work fine in another box.
I've messed around with the BIOS settings a lot driving different ways to get them to work to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

Check if the Storage is enabled under CSM (in boot options).
Some of the old SATA controllers require CSM.
