Well, I assumed that an AM4 motherboard would support AM4 CPUs, but apparently not; Ryzen 3,5,7 models below 3000 are not on the QVL and do not boot- I tried two different ones. What I was told is that the BIOS has a list of model numbers and their voltages, and won't start the OS unless it finds a match.
This is not unreasonable (albeit annoying) given how many different Ryzen CPU models exist. What I do find objectionable is that it simply stops, with nothing on the monitor and without any beep code (there is a code for "CPU failure", but it does not get sounded). I know the speaker is working as it beeps when this rig is powered up with no memory. I suppose if I had a PCI-E-specific POST card I might get some more information that would lead me to repent my sin of assuming that AM4 mobo supports AM4 CPUs. But I don't. And there are of course no LEDs on the motherboard either. Now (finally) the question: does anybody know (for sure) if any of the 4 LED connectors (ADDR_LEG, RGB_LED) would provide diagnostic information like POST codes, or if these are simply for decorative LEDs ("Brace yourselves. Christmas is coming!")? Factual answers would of course always be appreciated. |
