990FX EXTREME9 Video card

I have 990FX EXTREME9 MB and I am trying to use a  Sapphire RADEON HD6970 video card.
The processor is an AMD FX8350 with 16GB memory. With this video card causes the computer to stop on d6 and shuts down. I have tried all the trouble shooting tips in the manual with no results. Ultimately I want to run two of these cards. The BIOS version is already the latest.
 
Is there a resolution to this dilemma or do I need to use a different Video card?
 
Presently I am running successfully with a single ATI Radeon 46000 series card but this does not provide the video performance that I need.

Hi NV,

So that we can help, please list all the components inside, and also connected outside(eSATA, USB etc) by model numbers that make up your system when this is happening. Include the PSU and its age.

Knowing these will help us help you.



Was the card placed in PCIE1?

Did you power BOTH 6-pin AND 8-pin on the card itself?

And again, the PSU make, Model, and age please.

Here are the details you have asked for:
 
To start off, during the build I did this piecemeal, testing as I proceeded starting with the MB, Memory, Processor (with heat sink and fan), the keyboard and mouse, and the video card with one Monitor connected by DVI.
 
The equipment for the build include:
 
The 990FX Extreme9 MB BIOS P1.70  06/04/2014 (new)
 
Memory installed: 2x (2x4 GBG.Skill Ares  DDR3-1600 PC#-12800 4096MB CL 9-9-9-24 1.5v) Model No F3-1600C9D-8GAB (new)
 
The hard disk Drive is RAID 10 4x 2TB Seagate  ST200DM001 (new)
 
ASUS BW-12B1ST a [Optical drive] (2 Years)
 
LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS40 [Optical drive] (6 months)
 
Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2G GDDR5 PCI-E HDMI/DVI-I/DP DUAL -X (new)
 
2 Monitors ACER h213h connected one at a time or together.
 
Processor 4.00 gigahertz AMD FX -8350 Eight-Core Black Edition with Cooler Master Heatsink and Fan (new)
 
Keyboard and mouse: Microsoft Keyboard 800 and Microsoft Wireless mouse 1000 with a Microsoft USB transceiver model 1461
 
Power Supply: Thermaltake Purepower 500NP, age approximately 4 years.
 
3 Case fans all 5" diameter.
 
I have used either the 6pin , or the 8pin but not both.
 
The Video was placed in PCIe 1 first and then the other slots in accordance with the troubleshooting guide.
 
I have also tried two different Identical Video Cards for my eventual two card installation.
 
During testing for the cards most of the peripherals were disconnected (including the hard disks) to minimize any unnecessary complications.
 
I Trust that this information will be sufficient. If not let me know and I will see if I can supply more.
 
In its present state with an ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series, I am successfully running Windows 10 Home X64 successfully. The computer is very fast but, of course lacks the performance required with the existing Video card. This computer was built mainly for video editing, which requires a high performance video card.

Without myself looking further I'm 99.99% sure that card REQ'S both 6-pin and 8-pin connected.


But before addressing your using both 6 and 8 pin, let's instead consider if the below pic is your PSU you're currently using




If that is in fact your PSU, then a new PSU is in your immediate future before this 6970 ever takes flight.

The amp ratings are all wrong for a new system. New systems rely more heavily on the 12v rail(s) whereas the above tag represents being amp configured for older systems.

yes that is the power supply.
 
Now that you feel that this is the issue, what is a good choice for a power supply to run the system with 2 video cards?

Thank for your Input. I purchased aThermaltake SmartM850W PS. Total success, I am now running two Radeon HD6970 video cards. The performance is spectacular and I am using about 430W minimum rising to about 450W Max
