Hello friends, the email from ASRock says it can be done, but before they get back from Easter weekend, how do I do it please?
The front panel connector only goes in one place, using one of the SATA express connectors (EXP-2), which is also used by the lower M.2. Each lane can only support one hardware item. I haven't powered it up yet to test, just in case! Any ideas please? Otherwise, all going very well and good fun as my first build.

I didn't think you could do it. The MB book shows which ports share and are disabled when using one of them. I have 2 M.2 cards and use the port not connected with those two. I would like to add a 1TB Samsung 950 pro when they come out to compliment the 2 x 512 950's I have now but don't want to loose the front panel, which is way more convenient than the rear ones. If anyone has info on how to use 3 x M.2 slots in the Extreme 7 and keep the front expansion panel, let us know.

Z170 Extreme7+ user here, with three M.2 SSDs in the M.2 ports.
Given what the specifications say, I doubt the front panel USB 3.1 ports will work with an M.2 drive in all of the three M.2 ports. I don't have the USB 3.1 front panel installed in that PC currently, but I'll try it as an experiment. Richard, I don't think anything will be damaged if you start the PC with the USB 3.1 front panel in place with all the cables connected. The device will get power from the PC, but will have no resources to run the USB 3.1 ports. Frankly, I'll be surprised if the USB 3.1 front panel works with the three M.2 drive configuration. If it does, there must be some extra DMI3 lanes available that we are not aware of. |

Ok, front panel USB 3.1 bay mounted in the PC case, and connected to the SATA_EXP2 connector and SATA3_4 and SATA3_5. The USB 3.1 bay is also connected to a SATA power connector and a USB 2.0 header on the board.
PC booted and I'm using it now. The USB 3.1 front panel did not work with a USB 3.0 flash drive. The M.2 SSD in the M2_3 port is still recognized by Windows and works fine. This is exactly as I suspected. The M.2 ports seem to have precedence over the other connections that share the same resources, one SATA Express and two Intel SATA III ports. There is no way to select which connection/device(s) to use in the UEFI. That is, I cannot select the front panel USB 3.1 bay on the SATA Express 2 connection instead of the M2_3 port. I don't know what will happen if, for example, the USB 3.1 front panel bay's SATA Express connector was connected, and the USB 3.1 panel was working, while the M2_3 port was empty. Later if an M.2 drive was connected to the M2_3 port, what would happen? Would the USB 3.1 bay disappear and the M.2 SSD be recognized? IMO, the M.2 drive would be recognized and the USB 3.1 bay would disappear. I may be wrong since I have not tested this. FYI, the USB 3.1 bay powered up but without data lane resources does not like to POST nicely. It takes a while for POST to give up on it and continue. That is one side effect, annoying but apparently not dangerous. It would be nice if we could choose which shared connections we wanted to use, but that may be more difficult than it would seem to be. Keep in mind we have added two additional interfaces (M.2 and SATA Express) on a mother board, while not removing any other interfaces (SATA ports). Also, the amount of IO resources has not increased much if at all. We would need three times the IO resources to have all of these interfaces active at the same time. ASRock may have given us the interfaces, but we are limited in how much of each one we can actually use by Intel. |

Parsec - Thanks for running the test. This thread is the one with the most Z170 Extreme 7+ MB owners i have yet seen on the interwebs. Do you guys know of other places where owners share experiences? I don't see a club on Overclockers or anywhere else. I had issues at first posting that were RAM speed related. I want to OC this machine but need to come up to speed. I've been reading the Overclocker guide on Overclocker forums but it would be nice to see experiences with this board, 6700K etc. I think the M.2 slots are going to bring people to this board but I just don't see critical mass anywhere.
Thanks for the OT indulgence. |

My pleasure running that test. You missed the thread about using two or three Samsung 950 Pros in RAID 0 in this board. Or the forum member here with the top single video card Firestrike scores using our board. He also has a CPU-Z validated 5.1GHz OC of his i7-6700K, again using this board. IMO, this board is not perceived as a high end over clocking board, or a high end gaming board, by those two types of enthusiasts, extreme over clockers and gamers. That is true IMO because the Z170 Extreme7+ has three M.2 ports. Three M.2 ports are worthless when going after high over clocks. The same goes for gamers, many of which believe SSDs don't load games much faster than HDDs. Since M.2 SSDs don't provide higher FPS video game performance, what's the point of having three M.2 ports? For SSD/IO enthusiasts like myself, this board is a dream come true. I can use three NVMe or AHCI M.2 SSDs at the same time, one or more as OS drives, or in RAID arrays, and a RAID array as the OS drive. If I use only the integrated graphics (OMG!! ) I could have three Intel 750 NVMe SSDs in the PCIe slots, or other PCIe SSDs with M.2 to PCIe slot adapters. If you want a club for this board only, this may be the best place for it. I regularly run my memory at 3200 with this board, and at 3600 if I can endure a longer POST time for memory training. |

I have to say I fell in love with the Z170 Extreme 7+ the first time I saw it teased at CES last year. It really is an enthusiasts toy and I don't mean overclocker/gamer I mean a true tech enthusiast. The specs, the looks and the functionality are basically drool worthy. I mean come on 3 M.2 NVMe AHCI drives in RAID 0..... Aside from a few server type workloads no one needs that kind of crazy for any thing other than it being an awesome tech innovation you simply have to try out.
To me it represents the best of all worlds option. More than adequate for gaming, a very competent overclocker and heavily laden with features and options. My only gripe is that intel decided not to allow Xeons to work with the Z170 chipset or this would make for a fantastic Xeon based workstation board.

Thank you everyone, especially Parsec,
sorry to delay getting back to you all, been swapping stuff over with new computer. My original question to ASRock came back with the reply about each lane having multiple inputs, only one of which could be used, and then. "the front panel is also acceptable". I hoped in Taiwanese English, it meant simultaneously, as this was my question to them, but obviously not. Watch out for the Extreme 8+ perhaps? You're right Rock Hound, if we fill the ASRock forums with wishlists, everyone benefits. My 12 year old XP toy had the first core duo, and the first ssd. Having filled up and become very sick, I looked for something new which could last as long if needed. Ended up with; BeQuiet 800, I7 6700, 16 GB of Ripjaws 3200, Coolermaster Nepton 240, Asus strix 970, Win 10 pro, 3 x Samsung M.2, 256 for OS, 256 for software & programs & 526 for files & folders. Still got the 2 old drives & Blueray burner, and now got a 29 inch curved Samsung screen. Happy chappy! It was well worth spending 3 months waiting for each item to come up as a special offer somewhere. I can't imagine falling in love with a motherboard Xaltar, but everyting in my new toy is balck and gold, and it certainly looks beautiful, and as a novice, I'd highly recommend putting it together yourself, as it's been great fun, and it becomes something you want to continue caring for... Thanks again and best wishes to you all, Richard. , p

Well Xaltar, I really don't want to tease you, but in the USA you can find an extraordinary deal on this board, with a rebate. I know it won't do you any good in Bulgaria, but perhaps you could find it on sale somewhere?? http:///www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157627 The guy that wrote the top Favorable Review seems familiar to me... That price beats Amazon, or anything I've ever seen. Plus a kinda no-name keyboard and mouse free with this offer. Don't ask what I paid for mine, I was an early adopter and paid full price. I don't regret it. Of course, paying for even one PCIe SSD will be equal to or more likely beyond the price of the board itself. So that of course raises the price of entry... For a while, ASRock was selling the Samsung SM951 128GB AHCI model, but I can't find the link anymore... Anandtech has a review of this board, and at the end they considered how many users would try three PCIe SSDs in RAID 0. They decided a very small fraction would do that. While I'm not in that club (only did two), I know of at least two such users that posted in this forum. I must say that most of the time, you don't notice the speed of a Samsung 950 or Intel 750, except when you copy a huge folder between them or similar SSDs. When you rarely or never see the Windows file write/copy box appear, you know its fast. Yes, I'm spoiled... |

Once you have the bug you can never shake it. I can't even bring myself to consider prebuilt systems after having built all my PCs since the late 90s Enjoy your build
