I have an ASRock Z690 PG Velocita motherboard.
Today I have randomly decided to update the UEFI to its currently latest version 21.01 (Update CPU microcode to 0x12B) from version 20.02. The process went fine, except ever since after that, I'm hearing incessant, semi-permanent coil whine from the motherboard or CPU. Semi-permanent because it does not whine until I either enter UEFI or or Windows 10 login screen. I know it's either of those because because in my troubleshooting steps I went as far as disconnecting everything except for what I need to boot into Windows. Meaning, I turn on with just PSU (lol), CPU, RAM and boot SSD and I will hear the coil whine. From my perspective, I can't help but conclude that the UEFI update changed something that caused this hardly bearable phenomenon. I have purchased this motherboard just over a year ago and I'd rather not have to buy a new one already because of this. I can't describe in dB how loud the noise is but I can hear it through my fan noise and even my current typing doesn't mask the noise. Does anyone have any experience or a solution for this issue? |

I forgot to mention this.
The noise goes away with sufficiently high CPU load. In normal Windows operation it whines practically continuously and intermittently stops when I'm doing anything that appears to spike CPU usage. For a somewhat consistent test I used Prime 95. When I start a Prime95 test, the noise goes away. As soon as stop the test, the noise resumes. Rinse and repeat. It's very consistent in that regard. I should also mention I do not really engage in active overclocking. All UEFI settings pertaining that that are left on their default values or Auto. |

Update: Using the Phantom Gaming app, I get the following:
Performance mode: The utility was set to that upon opening the app. However I don't have have it starting up with Windows, so I'm not sure how it might change things. It didn't change anything about the issue. Standard mode: Set to this, the noise changes to a quieter and more intermittent "creaking". The perma-noise returns while using my mouse, however not as loud / high-frequency as before. Power Saving mode - The noise is gone. It returns rather quietly when moving my mouse. Using this utility, I can not quite find the connection between these modes and the adjustable values in the OC Tweaker section. I'd rather not mess with voltages, and adjusting the clock stuff doesn't seem to have an effect pertaining to the noise. |

I would open a support ticket with ASRock Tech Support:
https://tw.asrock.com/events/tsd.asp They will be able to help you get to the bottom of the issue. Good luck. |
