Dear ASrock-Support-Forum,

I use a number of ASrock motherboards in my PCs. One of them (x370 Taichi) does not boot correctly (takes a long while and makes 5 beep sounds 2 times) and does not display anything (the CPU has no GPU function). It does, however, make windows sounds.

While beeping 5 times the two digit indicator shows d6 and then 20.

According to the manual 'd6' 5 beeps and then '0d' means no GPU function. I however do not get the 0d after the d6, instead I get 20 after the d6 (d6 5beeps 20). What does this mean.

Below I have written down all digits appearing while booting up the system. I have recorded the indicator and played it back at x0.25 speed. Still some digits where too fast to pickup.

PC makes Windows sounds but no signal on the display.

According to an e-mail I got from the ASrock support, this might indicate that, there is no GPU installed or the GPU is defective. I have therefore reinserted the GPU and it still did not work.

As I was advised, I have tried another GPU in my system and fortunatly the PC booted up and put out a video signal. I concluded, as it was suggested, that this might mean that my GPU, I had installed originally, is defective.

After taking the 'none functioning' GPU to my dealership, they have installed it in one of their systems and told me that it worked fine in their system. Since I did take extra care of testing my original setup with reinserting the card, I am confused. Why did it not work on my system, eventhough my system works with a different GPU.

In short:

-my x370 Taichi motherboard doesn't work with the original GPU (see the sequence of 2 digit codes and beeps), it does, however, work with a differnet GPU

-my original GPU does surprisingly work at dealership (I'm going to test this myself with antoher system soon)

In light of this information, can you tell me, what the sequence of two digit codes, as well as the five beeps might mean in this particular context? The GPU is functional at the dealership, still I get these digits and beeps in my system at home. With a different GPU there is no issue in my system. I am confused about the situation.

Thanks in advance

From your description I would guess your GPU either doesn't like your display or
your display cable. I would try another cable and a different display output.

As for the codes, if the debug display goes blank and the system proceeds to boot
into an OS then you don't have any actual errors. The cycling codes are just the
steps in the POST process. It's a very simple system that allows you to troubleshoot
based on which code failed (it would remain on the display and not clear). If
the codes cycle then the display goes blank and the system continues to boot
then there are no errors found during POST.

The beep code indicates the system could not find either your GPU, or a display
connected. I would guess based on the fact it worked at your retail outlet that
the issue is with the cable or the display itself not being detected by the GPU.

I hope this makes sense and is of some use to you.

Thank you for your response.

Here is what I did:

-tested the GPU with the same DVI-cable and monitor as in the boot scenario in my first post (same result)

-tested the GPU with another cable (HDMI) and another monitor (same result but quicker. No looping perhaps?)

-tested this scenario again (same result)

-tested the first scenario (DVI-cable) again and it booted quickly with just a few codes and no beepind at all and output signal working

-tested this first scenario three more times and it keeps working

I'm confused why this worked. If you have a clue, I'd love to hear you explaination. It works fine now, so thanks for the clue.

Haha, a case of Gremlins it seems. Possibly a bad setting somewhere got cleared
when you tried the HDMI output then went back to DVI, your guess is as good as mine.
I was fairly sure it was display (cable or monitor) related however. Glad it's working
for you now and now you know what to try if it happens again. I doubt it will though.

That's great, thank you very much. Your suggestion did unexpectedly fix it.
