PC froze and now won't POST

I'm looking for some advice on diagnosing what might be wrong with my PC.

I built a new PC a few weeks ago and it has been working fine up until this evening. I was playing a game this evening when the image on the monitors completely froze. On the frozen screen the CPU temperature at the time of the freeze was registering 66°C so I don't think this would be a cause of CPU overheating.

The PC appeared to still be running with the fans spinning but it was completely unresponsive to any inputs and even wouldn't turn off when holding down the front panel power button. So I had to turn it off at the switch on the power supply.

When I switched the PC back on it wouldn't post and the CPU and DRAM post status lights were lit up on the motherboard.

I have since tried the following to diagnose the issue.

I removed the GPU and the issue remained the same.

I tried removing one stick of RAM at a time leaving one stick in slot A_1 and the issue remained unchanged.

I tried removing the cooler and CPU then reseated the CPU, reapplied thermal paste and reinstalled the cooler but the issue still remains.

I tried using a different PSU but the issue remains exactly the same.

Based on all of this testing I am concluding that the issue must be with either the CPU or motherboard. The issue is I do not have another AM5 motherboard to try the CPU in or another AM5 CPU to test in this motherboard.

So my main question is, is there any way I can tell if the issue is with the motherboard or CPU or should I just RMA both?

For reference the motherboard is the ASRock B850M-X and the CPU is a 7800X3D.

I'm having a similar problem. I don't have the same motherboard as you, but what worked for me the 1st time is to re-install the BIOS that came with the motherboard.

1. Turn off PSU for a minute or two to let power drain
2. Turn on PSU.
3. Prepare a USB with the BIOS version. You'll have to search up your motherboard for the specific BIOS and instructions.
4. Insert the USB in the flashback position and press the button until you see a LED start to flash.
5. Wait until the LED stops flashing. Do not turn on your PC during this process.
6. Once the LED stops flashing, turn off your PSU for at least 2 minutes.
7. Turn your PSU on and turn on your PC. It may take a few minutes for the PC to set up the memory.

Unfortunately, my PC crashed again and this trick did not work for me a second time.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried doing the BIOS flashback but unfortunately had no luck.

Another bit of information that might be relevant but I'm not sure is that when I power on the CPU cooler fans spin for around half a second then stop.

I shut off the PSU and left the computer off overnight. This morning, I turned it on and it booted again. However, it crashed about 10 minutes in and won't POST again.

Unlike your case, my CPU and GPU fans spin, but my chassis fans won't spin. My CPU and RAM post status checker lights are solid red.

I sent my computer off to my local computer shop for diagnostics. I'll report back if they find anything. I'm seriously tempted to switch motherboards if it's a motherboard problem.

I rummaged around my mobo box but I did not find a jumper. I bought the mobo new but the retailer opened it at the time of purchase to inspect the CPU pins to make sure none were bent. I wonder if the jumper fell out or something?

there was no jumper with my board
