I haven't actually started to use my x870e Taichi MOBO yet other than to do a quickie franken-monster out of the case bench test on my desk to make sure it could POST (it did YAY!) since I'm still working on a custom made case for it (what can I say? I'm a slow flatulent geriatric).

According to the block diagram The top PCIe slot is x16 when the second slot is empty. When something is plugged into the second slot, the allocation becomes x8/x8. However, in the x870e Taichi Software_Bios setup Guide_English, on page 67 under Advanced in the BIOS (UEFI), AMD Platform Module, it shows:

PCIe/GFX Lanes Configuration

Allows you to configure J10 Slot PCIe Lanes.

Configuration options: [Auto] [x8x8] [x8x4x4] [x4x4x4x4]

Which one is the J10 Slot? Ideally, I would like to be able to run x8 with the graphics card in the top slot (that's all it needs) and X4,X4 in the second slot for a dual SSD card (it requires MOBO bifurcation). Is this possible?

Also, just below it, is this:

PCIe x16 Link Speed

Allows you to configure PCIe X16 Link Speed.

Configuration options: [Auto] [Gen1]-[Gen5]

Is this only for the top slot when the second slot is empty? I would like to be able to run the top slot at Gen 4 speeds and the second slot at Gen 3 speeds if possible (I was under the impression only the first M.2 slot could run at Gen 5 speeds).

BTW, I'll be running Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon on it.

The board only has two PCIe slots, so I assume x8x4x4 will give you what you want (top slot at x8 and bottom slot at x4x4).

I know the board has only two PCIe slots; I said I have one.

I also know that 8x4x4 will give me what I want for lane allocation. My first question was is this MOBO capable of that? The information I'm getting from the manuals is contradictory.

Let me rephrase my first question. In the BIOS (UEFI) manual, it shows configuration options [Auto] [x8x8] [x8x4x4] [x4x4x4x4]. If I have a graphics card in the top slot and a card for two SSDs in the bottom slot and I chose the x8x4x4 option, would I get x8 in the top slot and x4x4 in the bottom slot? It's not clear in the manual if the configuration options are for both slots or only the top one.

thats what the logic suggest,

otherwise this motherboard with built in $11.5 bifurcation adapter would make no sense, but you never know

Hi!

I own the ASRock X670E Taichi.
I have the same bifurcation options as you do.

I've tested all of the bifurcation options.
Unfortunately, x8/x4/x4 means that your bottom PCIe slot will run in x8 mode, while your top slot will run in x4/x4 mode!

ASRock should create the x4/x4/x8 mode too!
But, so far, they didn't.

Thank you for your intelligent reply!

It's a shame ASRock has such poor documentation for the BIOS of what should be an excellent MOBO, especially since the BIOS has so many options. And it seems stupid for the bifurcation be x4x4x8 (even more so since the documentation claims x8x4x4) when the graphics card has to be mounted in the top slot because it would block access to the headers on the bottom of the MOBO if it was installed in the bottom slot.
