Hi all. I wanted to double check with community before I go and purchase a new motherboard. I built my system about 18 months ago, and it has worked great until recently. Now, it will not POST at all, no video, just seems dead. I woke up one morning and found the system off with this behavior.

At this point I've removed everything except:

  • Extreme4 x99 3.1 Mobo
  • Intel 5820k CPU
  • EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 80+ GOLD PSU

I'm expecting to get some beeps from the motherboard because the RAM is missing. Not only do I NOT get any beeps at all, but I also realized there are zero lights/LEDs lit on the motherboard. I've found many posts reporting an LED that stays illuminated, but found few noting no LEDs lit at all.

Does this suggest the motherboard died on me? Some things I've tried:

  • I completely removed the CPU, reapplied thermal paste and reinstalled.
  • I've switched to the backup BIOS chip B via jumper, and back again. Also pulled BIOS A chip out completely, then reseated.
  • I used a different PSU (the one that is powering an older computer I'm using to type this now) that is working flawlessly
All of these resulted in no behavior change.

It's also worth noting that fans plugged into the mobo do come on when the unit it turned on, so some power is getting through, which makes sense to me. But other than that, there is no POST beep and no motherboard LED lit. I've tested the speaker in another computer and it's working, and I'm confident it's connected to correct pins at this point (the "speaker" label printed on this mobo is rather far away from the actual connector).

Believe the warranty from ASRock is only 1 year, and I did not get any extended service plan from Micro Center. A shame, I've built a few machines over past 15 years, and this is the first time anything like this has happened. Maybe it was time.

Thanks for reading!!

Try pulling everything off the board and then pull the CMOS battery, leave it like that for a few hours then reconnect everything and see if that gets you posting. Sometimes a protection circuit can get stuck and will not go back to normal until all power is pulled from the board and all the caps discharge fully.

It's a long shot but certainly worth a try. Good luck and let us know what happens Wink

Thanks Xaltar for the advice, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I haven't tried it yet, but if it does work, fair to say there is still something wrong with the board if this is the necessary fix? Stripping all parts and reinstalling is no small bit of work. It took 18 months for it to occur this time, but I can't help wondering, will it happen again in 1 year or 6 months or... ? Uggg, so frustrating! I will report back after giving this full discharge a try.

Thx!

So I pulled everything from motherboard last night including CMOS battery around 8pm EST, and left disconnected over night until roughly 7:30am this morning. Added CMOS, CPU/HS, PSU and some fans back into mix. Still no mobo LED, and no beeps or other activity on boot other than most fans powering up. Previously I'd thought all fans were coming on, but turns out 1 of my 6 case fans didn't do anything. I tested this to prove it wasn't the fan itself by switching mobo connectors and the fan worked fine. So one of my fan connectors, which had been working fine up until this issue began, now appears dead, too.

Any other thoughts? I'm not super savvy when it comes to building computers, but at this point it feels like it has to be the motherboard, especially given no beeps, no LED and now at least one connector not working.

I'm also struggling with whether or not to leave a negative review/feedback on Amazon/other sites. I got 18 months out of it, which isn't nothing but still feels like an unnaturally short lifespan. I like to leave fair and reasonable feedback, so trying to work that out in my head. Is this a product defect, or just what you sign up for when dealing with computers? i.e., they are super complex and sometimes they fail...

Thanks again to anyone reading! Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate Smile

Decided to reach out to ASRock support and see what they said. Passed along basically everything mentioned in this thread, and they offered RMA, no hassle or anything which is great. I'm still not clear on their official warranty timeframe, but super glad they are working with me all the same.

Suppose we can resolve/close this thread if that is a thing.

Thx!
