J4205-ITX Booting Twice |

Just built a J4205-ITX with two Crucial CT51264BF186DJ sticks which run in Dual Channel mode.
I have found that the motherboard strangely boots twice from cold power on before entering Windows 10. Once power ia applied any reset works normally. This beavious has also been reported online by users on the Kodi hardware forum and a test review of the J4205-ITX. Will ASRock fix this anomaly? |

By boots twice do you mean loads the OS then shuts down and powers on (what booting twice means) or do you mean turns on for a few moments then powers off then back on again?
If you mean the latter (powers on then off then on) that is a power on self test and not anything to be concerned about. The reason I suspect this is the case is that you mention it only happens on cold boot. I would assume the system is powered off at the wall between uses? If not post back, if so it is just the system running a quick test before posting to ensure nothing was damaged by the power loss.

Yes, it is the latter. This is the first PC I have ever built that does this. I do not think this is normal behaviour. Furthermore I have ASRock N3150-ITX and N3700-ITX systems that do NOT do this ! On the J4205-ITX system, from cold boot you see the power LED come on, one or two seconds later it goes off, then on again and then it POSTs into the OS. Again, this cannot be normal operation and it has been commented upon elsewhere online. |

Is the system powered off from the wall before the cold boot or is the system simply shut down?
A power on self test is usually triggered by power loss, if the system is unplugged or turned off at a wall socket after shut down then one of 2 things is happening: 1. The OS is not shutting down the system correctly and when the power is disconnected it flags a power loss which prompts the self test 2. Power is being cut to the system too soon after shut down and triggering a power on self test If however the power is not being cut to the system and this is happening after a regular shut down (without cutting power) then there is something not working right. It could be the OS or it could be a glitch in the UEFI. If possible, try a Linux Live USB boot. You can download a popular distro (free) and use LiLi (linux Live USB tool) to create a bootable linux OS flash drive. Boot into linux then shut down and see of the issue occurs again. If it does then it is a hardware/UEFI bug. If not then the OS (windows) is messing something up on shut down. Creating a live linux usb key is simple, fast and is a very useful tool. You can recover data, test hardware and use all manner of useful tools all without risking any damage/corruption to your windows OS drive.

By cold boot I mean that the system has been powered off from the wall.
The fact that others have reported this issue (including a guy who published a test of the board) and by all accounts LInus users aswell makes me think that it is a bug in the BIOS rather than the OS not shuting down properly. The suggestion that power is being cut to the system too soon after shut down and triggering a power on self test is more serious and indicates a desgn fault in the board hardware. The mystery remains! We await a BIOS update from ASRock to see if that resolves the issue. or |

At best it is a bug, at worst the system is triggering a safety feature when it is not needed. Either way it is not a major issue nor one that will shorten the lifespan of the board or cause any damage to anything. I can trigger the same behavior by turning off my system at the wall without shutting it down so it is definitely a safety feature not some glitch.

I have the same problem with J3455M. In my case I have the same problem even when I reset it, make a change in the BIOS or force it to power off. The biggest problem for me is that the hard disks also power on/off/on which I find to be a major issue. @Gussie any updates, have you contacted tech support?

Removing all power is unnecessary and even harmful to your computer. Inrush Current http://sound.whsites.net/articles/inrush.htm With the low power draw of today's motherboards and devices when balancing the damages caused by inrush current vs the motherboard sipping minuscule amts of energy while simply shut down from the OS it's a no brainer. |
