Hello, Is there a preferred wifi adaptor for the Asrock z97 extreme 6 mobo? I've had some trouble with a few (AC) adaptors and I'm not really sure what the problem has been (drivers? router? something else?). Older adaptors seen to go ok. On the official Asrock product page I can see support lists for a few things (CPU etc.) but nothing on wifi adaptors.
I seem to recall that a while after I bought my mobo, there was a slightly different model that included an ac adaptor - is that correct? If so, what adaptor did it have? Thanks

Trouble: poor / fluctuating bandwidth (e.g. 25 mbps), random disconnects.
Adaptors: currently intel ac 7260 (drivers updated to the latest available from intel). Router: asus rt ac66u (current firmware: 3.0.0.4.380_7378 seems pretty good). I've also tried an edmiz ac1750 (ew-7833uac) - seemed to run a little better than the Intel but not as stable or zippy as I'd hoped for. Thanks for any help. |

If you had downloaded the full User Manual for your Z97 Extreme6 board, you would find that it is shared with the Z97 Extreme6/ac board, with an included WiFi module and antenna: http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Manual/Z97%20Extreme6.pdf The Z97 Extreme6/ac product page: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97%20Extreme6ac/ The WiFi module was made by Broadcom, but I have no idea what specific model WiFi module was included with the ac version of this board. That information is not included in the manual. The 2T2R 802.11ac WiFi adapter is just a 2.4G/5G 802.11ac dual band module with a two Transmit, two Receive antenna. I have no idea where you can buy one, or if it is still available. You could try ASRock Technical support for more information: http://event.asrock.com/tsd.asp Regarding whether or not this WiFi module is preferred for this board, that is impossible to say. What would make one WiFi module better than another for any board, besides its specifications? I highly doubt the Broadcom adapter would be any better than the Intel ac 7260, and I would prefer to have an Intel network adapter than any other kind. The antenna makes or breaks any WiFi connection, plus the signal strength of the router, and the intangibles of WiFi signals, range and interference being the two main variables. All reasons why I don't use WiFi connections on my PCs. |

Hi parsec,
thanks for the info on the Z97 Extreme6/ac. A WiFi module that runs well on this board (if there is one) would be preferred. The antennae I currently have connected to the 7260 are about on par to those in my laptops that connect much better than this desktop - it would be nice to know how to remedy that deficit, though money spent on getting a wired connection is no doubt better value in the long term. |
