Hi, I just bought a new build, everything is new, except the PSU: CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor ($409.89 @ OutletPC) Motherboard: ASRock - Z370 Extreme4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($156.98 @ Newegg) Memory: CMK32GX4M2B3200C16 Corsair - Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($444.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: be quiet! - STRAIGHT POWER 10 CM 800W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply After building it, it was not posting. So I began to troubleshoot. I followed the Tom's Hardware troubleshooting sticky and I'm currently breadboarding it. I ripped everthing out, except 2x power ATX cable and cooling fan, to start from scratch on breadboard. My diagnosis so far: - With only CPU in: 3 long beeps. (> as expected, no memory is in) - Next step, I put one RAM stick into B2 (regarding to asrock forum ): doesn't beep anymore. I either expected a one short, 3 long beep for "No VGA" or a short beep for sucessfully posting (because i7-8700k has a video card on board) The sticky says it may now be an issue with the PSU, did I understand this right?
Is there anything more I can do to confirm this? Is this maybe the wrong RAM? EDIT/UPDATE: So I just tested it with a different PSU [BeQuiet Straight Power E9-450W] and it still beeps 3x long without the RAM and with the RAM in it doesn't beep. That means it is the RAM and not the PSU, doesn't it? Asus Beep Guide is very unclear. What does "normal" mean? Does this board not make a single short beep after posting? If you don't hear the single beep POST Ok signal, the system did not complete POST for some reason. But you should have a signal to the monitor before POST completes, and see the ASRock logo screen before you hear the single POST Ok beep. I assume you have a mouse and keyboard connected to the board? You have your monitor connected to the Intel iGPU via which connector on the IO panel? You trust that the cable to the monitor is fine? Do you have a different cable you can try? You said everything is new except the PSU. So the monitor is also new? Did you try the monitor with another PC? Your monitor is configured to Auto select the active input? Did you try manually setting the input on your monitor? The Intel iGPU in your CPU will prevent any beeps due to a missing GPU, if a video card is not detected, the iGPU will be used automatically. The best place to get information about your board is ASRock's website, not PCPartPicker: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z370%20Extreme4/index.asp#Overview DRAM shorting out the PSU would, with any decent PSU like yours, cause the PSU to shut off from its protection circuitry. That suggestion is the craziest thing I've ever seen regarding trouble shooting. Any guide like this cannot be 100% dependable, as we can see with strange suggestions like this one. Is the 4/8 pin CPU power cable from the PSU labeled for CPU power use, and not a video card power cable? Did you examine the CPU socket for bent pins while installing the CPU? What are you using for the CPU cooler? I could not find your identical model of memory in the memory support list for your board. I can't say that conclusively means your memory is not compatible, since Intel chipset boards are normally not that picky about DDR4 memory compatibility. Corsair includes only Intel 100 series chipset boards (ie, Z170) as compatible (shown in your link), but again that is not a strict rule. Since DDR4 memory is so expensive, it's not easy to have another model available to use for testing. Be sure the memory is fully seated in the DIMM slots. There really isn't much besides the basics when troubleshooting a failure to POST, as least with what we can know from a forum post, rather than having the PC in front of us to see for ourselves. You seem to have both the 24 pin and 4/8 pin CPU power cables connected. Since you've tried many different memory configurations, try putting one DIMM in the A2 slot, and then clear the UEFI/BIOS/CMOS with the jumper on the board. Then try starting the system again. |

Thx parsec, for actually reading my post and your thoughtful comments. Generally the only new stuff are mainboard, cpu & memory. I was typing a long answer, where I (re-)did all your mentioned points step by step or clarified it further. But in the end, you good sir, are a genius: I always tested my stick on B2, because I read it on the forum here. BUT just now, testing it with wired K&M connected, to see if that would change anything, I only had a stick in A2, like you said, and suddenly it works! I thought I had tested that before, but I also changed the MB battery and cleared CMOS. Thx, you saved christmas! |
