Hi,

I'm Nancy, a final-year student. I am interested in gaming, and I'm thinking of building a gaming PC - but I'm not some computer geek, and finding the right part seems too hard. Can you guys please check the compatibility I shared below and advice me if there are any changes which are needed to be made??

I really appreciate it, and thank you!

Watercooling always looks nice, but proepr air cooling is better, especially the Noctua coolers, they don't have bling bling.
Watercooling only cools the CPU, but the Voltage Regulator Modules, short VRM's, that provide the power to the CPU, cab get so hot, you cannot touch them without burning your fingers.
Proper airflow directly over the VRMS is important.
The memory controller is integrated in the CPU, it is not on the baord and on a 2600 CPU runs at 2933MHz
https://www.amd.com/en/product/7671
Overclocking to 3000, 3200, or 3600, has absolutely no effect on the overall performance of your system, unless the latency timing is lower on the XMP profiles, which it usually isn't.
NZXT case is standing her under my desk, no separate headphone/mic plug and only 1 USB3 port, and one USB C, also the quality is not that great, and when it comes to airflow, it is really bad,
Fractal design Focus G, is available in 5 different colors, and is not expensive, and has great airflow
Memory, I personally used patriot Viper kits, inmeny builds, works blrilliant
Power supplies, go for a true memory manufacturer like Seasonic, and go for 800Watt or above, graphics cards, can have huge peak loads, and EOM brands like Corsair, cut costs, by letting other companies, like Seasonic building OEM PSU's with different specs, go for the Gold certifation or above, the Seasonic Prime have an extremely long lifespan.
For mnotherboard, you can also go for B550 steel Legend (a 2600 wil not work, go for 3 or 5000 series), I don't know if you really need Wifi, if not, skip it, LAN cable is always more reliable, and faster.
Wifi channels contineously change because other Wifi devices, keep selecting different channels
A Wifi card, with remote antenna's is better
And for your OS, go for one NVME (PCIE) M.2, the speed is maybe 10 times higher as your HDD will ever reach
A real SATA3 HDD doesn't exist, only the drive electronics ar SATA3, but mechanically it is impossible to transfer data aqt SATA 3 speed, when you're lucky, you will receive maybe 230 to 240MB/Sec, an M.2 goes above 2000MB/Sec, and doesn't need cables, look for a PCIE (NVME) M.2, Samsung has very good ones.
Your system, will boot faster, and it increases performance dramatically, over a harddisk.
That is what you want in games, it doesn't really matetr if you use 2x 8GB, or 2x 16GB, at least not when gaming, that is more about disk access, and data transfer, and your GPU

Kind Regards

Hi Nancy,

From the most important items I highlight: -

item 6 = DDR5 is wrong, Ryzen 2600X only DDR4, not DDR5.
32GB is not necessary = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H19_JKw4QN4
I had 2x16GB 3000M/T
now using 4x8GB 36000M/T - am selling of 2x8GB now

item 3 = over prised, not useful, I'm using liquid cool also, not recommend, don't waste the US$ 425. Just use AMD's biggest wairth prism fan, best bang for the buck. Ryzen 2600X head dissipation TDP = Thermal Dissipation Power something is only 65 watts heat, which is not 65 power electricity used.

item ??? = you didn't choose to buy a NVMe SSD (non volatile memory express solid state drive) why ??? this is the life and soul of the PC, can't live without, it's the singular most important technological leap, without SSD, no amount of CPU/RAM/GPU power and speed will help.

____________________________________
then the basics

item 1 = you budget US$ 239.99, but is 2600X which is OLD outdated. 5600x can be had for less money US$ 199 example https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-5600X-12-Thread-Processor/dp/B08166SLDF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=26F2K35OAABV6&keywords=ryzen+5600x&qid=1660096651&sprefix=ryzen+5600x%2Caps%2C333&sr=8-1

5600x is the king of price/performance ratio

item 5 = GPU 3090 is really good, but needs very powerful CPU to make full use of it. hence: -

if you buy 2600x, then DON'T buy 3090. Get around Radeon 6600XT or RTX3060 - I don't remember well, but around.

if you get 5600x, then get around Radeon 6700XT or RTX3070

if you get 5800x or higher, then get Radeon 6800XT or RTX 3080

if you get 5800x3D or 5900x or 5950x then you can but RTX3090 or Radeon 6900XT or 6950XT

see 5800x3D with various other GPU vs CPU = https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=5800x3d

Hi Nancy,

I recommend this list: -

1) 5600x US$ 200
= https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-5600X-12-Thread-Processor/dp/B08166SLDF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=26F2K35OAABV6&keywords=ryzen+5600x&qid=1660097492&sprefix=ryzen+5600x%2Caps%2C333&sr=8-1

2) B550 chipset motherboard
example 1 = ASRock B550M-HDV = cheapest = US$ 101
=> DIY self add heatsinks to VRM = https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-B550M-HDV-Supports-Processors-Motherboard/dp/B089W26FCB/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=asrock+b550&qid=1660097608&sprefix=asrock+%2Caps%2C415&sr=8-8

example 2 = not cheapest = already have heatsinks on VRM = US$ 139
ASRock B550M Steel Legend
https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-B550M-Supports-Processors-Motherboard/dp/B089W2Q2QC/ref=sr_1_3?content-id=amzn1.sym.0cb3fee0-1a32-4834-9630-18d74b7cf46e%3Aamzn1.sym.0cb3fee0-1a32-4834-9630-18d74b7cf46e&keywords=asrock+b550m&pd_rd_r=f20cd01d-0d8e-457b-bb2a-97f06a63dbf5&pd_rd_w=GhQxs&pd_rd_wg=j3Aup&pf_rd_p=0cb3fee0-1a32-4834-9630-18d74b7cf46e&pf_rd_r=EE7V38CJNJ45WRMGZWVE&qid=1660097797&sr=8-3

item 3 = 5600x comes with Wraith Stealth Cooler - should be just enough, no point going to liquid cooling for this CPU. Only 65 watts Thermal Dissipation (TDP). No need to waste money.

item 4 = your selection is OK

item 5 = PowerColor's Radeon 6700XT US$ 429
due AMD nearly always cheaper than nVidia for the same performance hence my 1st recommendation is =
https://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-Hellhound-Graphics-Raytracing-Infinity/dp/B08Y93KQR4/ref=sr_1_6?crid=OQHBEQ23MWXO&keywords=6700xt&qid=1660098113&sprefix=6700xt%2Caps%2C276&sr=8-6

item 6 = 2*8GB must get RYZEN certified
memory QUALIFIED VENDORS LIST says for example ASRock B550 Steel Legend's
https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B550M%20Steel%20Legend/index.asp#MemoryVM

or whatever word compatible (but do not be fooled)
- extremely important for you newbie not to headache and not to go into expert bios mode to solve timing parameters issues.

item 7 = must get NVMe Gen4 = PCIe4 because 5600x and B550 can make use of it.
eg https://www.amazon.com/s?k=2tb+nvme+gen+4&crid=1ZR8WOF7ID5KQ&sprefix=2tb+nvme+gen+%2Caps%2C292&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

item 8 = your selection ok

I just save your nearly US$ 2000 :)

Hi @nancyj61

If you can wait, all new Ryzen 7000 series will be launch in October or after,

and all new Radeon RDNA generation 3, probably Radeon 7000XT will also be launch after October

together is DDR5 and NVMe Gen 5 = PCIe 5

motherboard chipset to match is B650

example news = https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-reference-ryzen-7000-system-demoed-with-pcie-gen5-ssd-based-on-micron-232-layer-tlc-memory

All latest tech probably double the price, but last longer.Versus what I recommend above will be 2nd latest tech, hence best bang for the buck now.

Hi @nancyj61

September 15th launching Ryzen 7000
see https://www.tomshardware.com/news/ryzen-7000-launching-september-15th

Ryzen 7700x may be US$ 250 ???
see https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-zen-4-cpu-pricing-leaked-ryzen-9-7950x-may-cost-over-dollar800

Oh apparently B650 pcie5 is only storage, GPU lanes don't get pcie5
see https://wccftech.com/asrock-b650e-b650-motherboard-lineup-for-amd-ryzen-7000-desktop-cpus-leaks-out/

it's OK I suppose, we're kept reminded that GPU data throughput does not never saturate pcie4, hence we are not lost,

but storage NVMe SSD are able to make full use to pcie5 if the SSD is that fast.... so my reommendation stands, just get B650, not waste the money on X670. Especially not the x670E, unless you're sure you know you will use whatever's extra over B650.
