Hi -

I haven't built a workstation in a number of years so this is fairly new to me.

Parts:

ASrock B450 Gaming K4
AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Team T-Force Vulcan 2x16gb DDR4 3200 RAM
MSI GTX 1660 Super video card
Crucial 1TB NVMe SSD
550W PSU

Computer boots fine and runs great, however if I tax the CPU for a bit or run a stress test the system just shuts down like someone pulled the plug.

I watch the CPU temp during my testing and it never gets to 70c - The temp at idle is 40c. I think the system has a hard shutdown when the CPU hits 70.

I flashed the bios on the board to the latest version - reset bios to all defaults (except CPU_FAN1 I am keeping at 100%)

I know the Ryzen CPU can go about 70c I believe its rated for 95c.
I can't seem to find anywhere in the bios to set that "max" threshold for CPU temp? Am I missing somehting

Oh and the board is detecting the ram as DDR4 2400 (not 3200)

Not sure what to do, or what I am doing wrong.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

As far as your memory goes .. have you tried enabling the XMP profile?
so you are having hard shut downs using 2 different BIOS revisions? Are you on 4.20 right now?

How is your air flow in your case?

Does shut down happen with same program .. or is it not program specific, just 100% cpu usage regardless of what is actually pushing your cpu..?

You could try reseating everything .. cpu/gpu/power connectors/RAM .. etc .. check Event Viewer>Windows logs>System and it might give you clues to what is triggering shut downs .

What is memory usage at when cpu is at 100%?

You ultimately might have a bad CPU and could request an RMA ..

Thank you for getting back to me.
Yes - hard shutdown on the ship BIOS and after updating to the latest version
Airflow is good - 3 front intake fans - 2 blow hole fans - 1 exhaust fans - all running MAX RPM including stock CPU cooler.

Shut down happens when running Prime 95 and Web based stress test.
When running Prime 95 on 12 threads the shutdown is almost instant! (within one or two seconds) The web based stress test takes a little longer maybe 3 to 5 min

Memory usage is LOW when shutdown occurs - only 1 program open

If the computer is idle it will run for hours w/o issue.

Nothing in logs - just "unexpeced shutdown"

The CPU was in an MSI board first (which failed with a VGA error) these budge boards are hard to find because of shipping from China so I switched to this ASrock board. I am going to try additional heat transfer paste on the cpu and I am upgrading the stock cooler, however I don't think its going to do much since the CPU never shows a temp above 69c before it shuts off..

ODD...

I'm building 2 of these systems and have another CPU on order.. so going to try a swap too..

Thanks again
-Joe
