Hi,

I'm trying to build a PC using ASRock X399 Gaming Professional Mother board with a AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX using a power supply Corsair HX850 and I had some questions about the motherobard 4-Pin ATX12V2 since my power supply doesn't include a cable that fits that 4-Pin

Is that port optional? In some forums for similar ASRock motherboards (the Taichi model I believe) they mention that its only used for extra power for overclocking, but not sure if that applies for the x399.

In case it is actually required, since that full modular Corsair HX850 power supply proves 2 CPU connectors, is it simply a matter of buying an additional cable that instead of ending on the other side on 8-pin it is 4-pin?

Thank you for the help in advance!

The 2970WX is a lot more demanding power wise than your standard AM4 CPU .. You might run into stability issues without the 4 pin connected under high workloads.

You could run it without and if you run into stability issues, then get the 4-pin plug in

I'd get it now rather than later though personally... but that's just me

I run a 3600x on my daughters Steel Legend x570 and don't have the 4-pin connected without issue.. only a 65w 6core 12 thread CPU though.

Like ThreeDee said, with that CPU I would connect it. The WX CPUs are one of the
reasons the extra power connector exist on X399 boards. I always connect the
additional power connections where applicable, if for no other reason than to
split the load through the headers and have some redundancy.
