AB350 pro4 BIOS update query

   Hello

I have an AB350 pro4 motherboard with bios 3.0 running a 1500X.

I just bought a 5600 to upgrade.

I see that I have to follow the correct order to update the bios 3.4-5.4-7.0  My question is which should be the final bios that I install?  I see there are a lot of beta BIOSes.  Should I just install the most recent 10.41?  I see that 8.02 is marked with either L or I.  What does that mean?  Is it a more stable long term solution?

Any tips before I do this?  Do I need to remove the CPU driver in device manager before I do it?

	When updating the BIOS for new CPU support it's usually best to update to the latest version. In the case of your board, that has been in production since Gen 1 Ryzen, the beta BIOS versions provide support for features the board was not officially supposed to support. Basically the beta versions are ASRock taking care of customers with older boards. Technically these older boards shouldn't be receiving updates anymore outside of critical security updates. I am not certain but IIRC the version that starts with an L addressed a security related update. All newer versions will include it's functionality, including the betas. They build their new versions, beta or otherwise on the latest stable version usually. As for the update itself: 1. Install the latest "all in one" driver from AMD (just a precaution) 2. Enter the BIOS and reset to factory defaults (or similar depending on wording) 3. Reboot into OS and shut down 4. Begin the update process from inside the BIOS using the "instant flash" method 5. Repeat from step 2 for the next version update until you have reached the latest version That should be it. Good luck

	Thanks. So the beta BIOSes are just as stable as any of the others? I really appreciate ASRock supporting my mobo as long as they have!

	If they are available for download on your product page then yes. ASRock take down betas that have issues very quickly.

	I may have wrecked my motherboard. I did the 3.4 upgrade no problem. Then I took out the 1500x and put in the 5600 thinking I would be ready for the new bios and it shouldn't care about the CPU just to get to the bios. It wouldn't boot at all, so I swapped the processor back to the 1500x. I was lazy and didn't reinstall the heatsink thinking upgrading a bios isn't going to stress the CPU, so it should be fine. It booted into the bios just fine and I started the 5.4 update and walked away. When I came back, the computer was completely off. Now I just get a black screen when I turn it on, no falied post, no nothing. I can't get into the bios settings. My guess is that the CPU overheated and the system shut down mid upgrade to 5.4. Is there anything I can do to recover or did I brick the motherboard? Thanks

	RMA is your only solution if it failed the update, that or take it to a specialist that has the tools to manually flash the BIOS with an external flasher. Not using a heatsink in the UEFI is a terrible idea, the UEFI heats up the CPU fast. The ROM chip it is stored in is too small to include optimization code so the CPU runs HOT in the BIOS, hotter than it would in your average game. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news You can try clearing CMOS using this method, if the flash completed it may wake up the system with the new CPU installed. Failing that, as I said above.

	Thanks for being so helpful. I tried what you suggested, but the motherboard is dead. Dumb dumb dumb on my part. Hopefully someone learns from my mistake. I certainly did. Buying a new mobo isn't a huge deal, but I took pride that my hardware was 8 years old and still working perfectly. My windows key was originally Windows 7 and was going to become Windows 11. Oh well, it's done now now. I'll definitely look to buy ASRock in the future with this great service!
