Title: No POST with 4.x BIOS on B850M Steel Legend WiFi

I updated my B850M Steel Legend WiFi yesterday to bios 4.10, however it did not POST.

First I used Instant Flash inside the bios menu, then later the Flashback button and USB Stick. Both times the BIOS updated itself finished, but the system did not post upon reboot. I did a CMOS reset and also tried bios 4.03. Still no POST.

The exact symptom:
- After BIOS update to 4.10 or 4.03 and CMOS jumper reset + power removal.
- Attach power and monitor (no peripherals).
- Press power button. Fan spin up.
- Red CPU and orange DRAM diagnostic LED turn on and stay on (continuously).
- This continues without any change for up to 20 minutes. PC does not POST or shutdown.

I flashed the BIOS back to version 3.50 + CMOS reset. It posted on first reboot within 30 seconds.
Also I activated EXPO and it posts within 90 seconds. Then after training it starts within 10 seconds.
So far the system was stable with EXPO on bios 3.30, 3.40 and 3.50.

To me it looks like the memory is not training even with JEDEC settings. However I cannot change anything, as I cannot enter BIOS.
I am not sure what else I can do.

Hi wangong.

I see you are using KingBank RAM, there is a known issue with that RAM (caused by
the RAM) where it caused systems to fail to POST on BIOS versions higher than 3.XX.

Try removing the RAM and installing a single stick in slot A2. Clear CMOS then
power the system on and give it some time to train the memory. If all goes well
you should be able to POST.

Once you are able to enter the BIOS you need to go to the following setting:
Advanced> AMD CBS> DDR Options> DDR Controller Configuration> Refresh Management
Set this to disable. Once done, save and exit the BIOS then shut down and reinstall
your other RAM module. You should now be able to boot normally again.

If the above trick doesn't work for you and you still have no POST then revert
back to the latest available 3.XX BIOS for your board using flashback and open
a support ticket with ASRock:
https://tw.asrock.com/events/tsd.asp

Tell them you are using KingBank RAM and that it's EXPO and JDEC values are incorrect
and causing your system to fail to POST. They should be able to help you with
an updated BIOS that bypasses the bad information in your RAM's firmware.

Good luck.

Hello Xaltar,

thank you for your reply.

I flashed my BIOS to 4.10. Starting it with just on memory stick on A2. It still did NOT POST ...

I looked up the JEDEC values that are stored in my KingBank memory:

FREQ: 4800 MHz
tRFC1: 708 cycles (295 ns)
tRFC2: 384 cycles (160 ns)
tRFCSb: 312 cycles (130 ns)

To me both tRFC2 and tRFCSb seems quite low.

So I guess your assumption is right. BIOS 4.XX defaults to mixed or FGR mode and then fails with too low timings. BIOS 3.XX works as the default refresh mode does not use these timings.

I will reach out to the support and see what they can do. I hope future BIOS updates address this in some other way.

That's the issue yeah. I was hoping the workaround would work for you. I have also
sent off an email to my contacts at ASRock, they asked me to get you to open a
support ticket, done and done I guess

Let me know how it goes with the support ticket.

Good luck
