I don't think it has anything to do with a conspiracy. Like, if you have a USB 2.0 port, you wouldn't call it a manufacturer conspiracy that they can't give you a BIOS update to turn your USB 2.0 port into a USB 3.0 port, right? TPM 1.2 vs TPM 2.0 is like that. Think of a motherboard that came with TPM 1.2 as analogous to having USB 2.0 ports. At least that's my understanding of how it works, based on what I read. |

It's a bit more complicated than that given TPM headers exist on many/most boards
that would/should allow you to upgrade to TPM 2.0 if a BIOS version were to support it. ASRock has stopped providing these updates when users ask for them. Up until recently they were providing a custom/beta BIOS to anyone who asked to enable the ability to install a TPM 2.0 module. There has clearly been a policy change. The conspiracy isn't really a conspiracy, Microsoft wanted a hard cutoff and chose TPM version as a neat and tidy excuse so they can say "your old hardware isn't safe anymore". No conspiracy, they actually say this in their marketing. |
