2026 Gaming system with DDR3

With RAM prices such as they are currently I thought I would write up a little
general guide for those looking to game in 2026 on a budget. There are several
caveats here unfortunately. TPM 2.0 support (and windows 11 by extension) will
be out of the question in most cases, as will the latest secure boot keys.

First up, the "ideal" build that, with some luck and few extras should support
TPM2.0 and Windows 11:

AliExpress has several X99 boards that support DDR3 RAM, I will list one that has
been used successfully by multiple people.

Motherboard: X99-XD3
CPU: E5 2678 v3
RAM: 32gb kit, 4x8gb DDR3 and you can used ECC registered RAM here for even more cost saving
GPU: I use an ASRock Radeon RX 590 but there are numerous other options
PSU: ASRock Pro 750G is a good option here for a quality PSU that won't break the bank
TPM: MSI TPM2.0 module

This is a solid performing system that should be more than up to most modern titles
albeit with lower graphical settings. Here we sacrifice where it comes to power
consumption per watt, the E5 v3 CPU is a lot more power hungry than modern CPUs.
I wouldn't recommend any GPUs faster than an RTX 3070 or RX 6800 with this system
however as the PCIe Gen 3 slots will bottleneck them to the point that you won't
actually see a performance increase over these cards anyway.


If windows 11 and secure boot aren't a requirement for you (you don't play games
that require secure boot for anti-cheat) then another solid, and cheaper option
is the Z97 platform, here is a basic example that I have tested personally:

Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme 3 (a solid, reliable board I have had in used for over 10 years without fault)
CPU: Xeon E3-1246 v3
RAM: DDR3, you will want 4x8gb I would avoid ECC here, registered ECC will not work.
GPU: As above
PSU: As above

This should be even cheaper than the above system but you will not be able to
run Windows 11. For a Windows 10 or Linux gaming setup however it is perfect and
still more than capable of handling modern titles.

Lastly we have intel 100 series motherboards that support DDR3. Some people have
had luck installing TPM 2.0 modules on these and managed to get them working
but mileage will vary. A newer platform, newer CPU architecture and in some
cases, with BIOS mods, these can be made to work with Windows 11 supported CPUs
I won't get into the how here as it is beyond the scope of the average user.
These boards can be hard to find and quite expensive so they are not an ideal
option. I have listed them for those that are more tech savvy and have the itch
to modify and tinker. Some examples from ASRock are:

ASRock H170 Combo (my personal favorite as it supports DDR3 and DDR4 on the same board)
ASRock Z170 Pro4/D3
ASRock Z170 Gaming/D3

With BIOS modification these boards can be made to support intel 8th gen CPUs
as well as Windows 11. A google search will point you in the right direction
but be warned, this is not for the feint of heart or the uninitiated.
