I am setting up a small kiosk box for the kids room at our church and the DeskMini X600 keeps coming up in every thread i read, so figured i should just ask here first.

Use case is pretty boring honestly. It sits under a 24" touch monitor, boots straight into chrome in kiosk mode, and the kids play browser bible games on it between sunday school classes, mostly the quiz stuff from bible quest which is all html/js, nothing heavy. No gaming, no video editing. Runs maybe 6 hours a week, but it gets power cycled by whoever is last out the door, which worries me a bit.

Few things i cant figure out:

- is a 65W Ryzen overkill for this? i was looking at the 8500G but even a 5600G feels like too much for a machine that shows a webpage
- how does the X600 handle being shut off at the wall over and over. our volunteers are not gentle with it.
- single stick of 16gb fine or should i just do 2x8 so the igpu has dual channel

I did look at the DeskMini B760 as well, but AM5 seemed the safer bet long term. Maybe im overthinking the whole thing.

Also if anyone has done a near silent or fanless setup in one of these barebones i'd really like to hear about it, the room is small and every fan noise carries.

thanks

Either Deskmini would work just fine for your needs, the X600 or the B760. For
what you are describing you would be just fine with a low end APU.

For the Deskmini x600: R3 8300g
For the Deskmini B760: Pentium G7400

I would personally go with the B760 and the Pentium for your use case, it will be
significantly cheaper when paired with the budget friendly Pentium G7400.

For RAM, go with whatever is cheaper, 2x8gb or 1x16gb, dual channel won't make
any noticable difference playing basic web games.

Hard power off (powering off at the wall), it likely won't hurt the system but
you always run the risk of data loss when you power off a system without shutting
it down. I wouldn't recommend allowing that, on any system.

With the Pentium setup the system should remain fairly quiet given it's low power
draw. If it's too loud with the stock cooler you can always replace the stock
cooler with a low profile (under 47mm high including fan) cooler with a Noctua
silent fan.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
