Sort of long so you've been warned. I know I probably won't get this figured out but I figured I'd pick the brains of folks on here anyway. I've been building PCs for the better part of 3 decades and it was not until the last year that I finally ran into a situation I just cannot figure out.
I bought a Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G 3rd party like a year ago, I was gonna pair it with a B550M Steel Legend so I got one of those boards. Got it all assembled and went to turn it on and I got the CPU and DRAM lights on the MB. Fans spinning and everything but no post no video nothing. I messsed around with all the usual stuff, reseating CPU, memory sticks, trying every combination of slots, clear CMOS, checked for bent pins etc etc. Just could not get it to work. So I started on the normal troubleshooting stuff, I got a 2nd identical 4650G, same thing. Tried a different set of memory from the QVL and all that same switching around, completely different PSU, trust me I covered it all, even verifying it has the latest bios from the factory. At that point I just figured the board was DOA. So I RMA'd it. At the same time I ordered the Pro 4 thinking this should alleviate my problems. Much to more horror, got this Pro 4 board in put the 1st 4650G in ... CPU/DRAM lights, OMG, same with the second 4650G. Went through the gamet of the same troubleshooting stuff. Nothing. That was probably 6 months ago and I got frustrated and just put it aside. About a week ago I decided to come back to it, but this time I was gonna try a different CPU, so I ordered a Pro 3400G. It came in the mail, I popped it in, and what do you know, the thing started up perfectly the way it should have. So my question is, why in the world would two completely different 4650G chips not work in TWO completely new motherboard models, both of which claim that CPU is supported, and with using everything on the QVL as listed. At this point I've got 2 4650G CPUs that I can't really confirm if they actually work, but I have no reason to suspect they don't as the odds of getting 2 non functioning CPUs in a row are pretty slim, in fact in my 30 years of doing this i've only run across maybe a half dozen or so CPUs that did malfunction. |
