Subject: g41m-vs3 mobo + kingston kvr13n9s8/4 4GB ram issue

Hello and merry x-mas,

I have searched the forum for this issue but I have only found "black screen" issues. Mine is a little bit different.

MOBO: G41M-VS3
RAM: kingston kvr13n9s8/4 1333Mhz 4GB stick - one-sided
CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 (64bit ready)
O/S: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

The issue is this; I have replaced (swapped) my old ram with the new kingston ram. The computer boots up normally but it only shows 2GB in the system info and not 4GB. I did check the BIOS and it also tells me that it sees only 2GB only.

Have I skipped a setting or forget to do something?  A jumper that needs to be changed on the mobo or a setting in the BIOS that needs to be changed?

I did read somewhere that I must reset the BIOS/CMOS - something that needs to be done as well?

Otherwise, the comp is working fine - it's just not seeing the full 4GB...

Thanks in advanced for any help/suggestions

What BIOS version are you using?

It's written v02.67C American Megatrends. I don't recall ever doing a BIOS upgrade yet.

That is the latest BIOS for your board. Unfortunately that likely means that the RAM is simply not compatible with your system as it is significantly newer.

Damn - getting older or more specific model RAM is getting harder and harder. Especially when I not live in a major city...

Thanks for your help

It can be very frustrating trying to get older RAM. You can try contact ASRock Tech Support Directly about your problem, they may be able to help further.

Tech support can be found http://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp" rel="nofollow - here

That is the problem, you need double-rank/sided module to support 4GB module on the G41.  G41 was an odd cut-down part that could support only one DIMM per channel instead of the norm two DIMMs per channel in the G43 and G45.

Also note that the http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/G41M-VS3%20R2.0/" rel="nofollow - Revision 2.0 of the G41M-VS3 has a newer BIOS 1.90 which "improved memory compatibility".   Both revisions shared the same BIOS up to 1.70 or 1.80, but this 'improved memory support' BIOS is not posted for G41M-VS3 1.0.

tcsenter is correct. These sticks won't work on this board as they are single-sided high density modules.

See Kingstons Manufacturers Response:

snippet:
"" This is a Single Rank module that uses larger individual chips which are not compatible with older DDR3 chipsets such as X38 X48, G41, etc. ""

I just checked. I didn't realize that the mobo installed is actually the R2.0.

Maybe grasping at straws now but I will try the 1.90 BIOS to see if it helps.

Thanks.

Get it straight, the pic you posted earlier showed it being flashed with the 1.80 from a NON r2.0 BIOS file.

*bump* same problem here with AsRock G41M-VS3 R2.0 / Kingston HX313C9FWK2/8

I've just bought both the board and the ram, and I'm yet to see a single spec that shows me incompatibility (besides the memory QVL that says there's no way to do 1333 & 8GB RAM, which is what this board is announced with).

Anything from Tech Support that's more forward pointing?

Thanks,
ab
