The number indicates the number of pins in the socket so yes, different number of
pins, different number of contacts on the CPU. Even when the socket has the same
number of pins, like gen 6/7 and gen 8/9, there are differences in the chipset that
make the older generation incompatible with the newer (both CPU and board).

When you are looking to upgrade a system's CPU the first thing you need to know
is the socket and chipset. With that information you can then find a compatibility
list, like the one ASRock_TSD linked. Having your board model makes that even
easier to find. Just go to your board's product page and check CPU compatibility.

The best you can get for your board is an i7 3770k. If you are using an i3 or
i5 it will be a significant performance uplift for you. The other alternative
is to upgrade board, RAM and CPU. Going with AMD's AM4 platform will give you
a lot of options.

For a tighter budget I would go with:

B450 motherboard (whichever is cheapest for you)
Ryzen 5 1600 (the "AF" model can be had for a great price)
8gb of DDR4 RAM, 2x4gb kit.

If you have a bit more to spend then I would go with

B450 board, making sure it is Ryzen 3000 ready
Ryzen 5 3600
16gb of DDR4 3200 or better, 2x8gb kit.

Otherwise, keep an eye on places like ebay for a used 3770k and you can install
that in your current board. Just be sure you have a compatible BIOS version.

One last question: Is there a difference between 1150 and 1155

YES , they each support only one family of cpu. Not interchangeable
Asrock Z370 Gaming K6,Intel i7 8700K,

With Z77 you will be limited to 3rd gen CPUs I'm afraid. 4th gen is on Socket
1150, 5th is almost impossible to find but also on socket 1150. 6th and 7th gen
are on socket 1151 (100 and 200 series chipset) and 8th and 9th gen are on socket
1151 (300 series chipset).

This is one of the pitfalls of intel systems, they tend to change the socket every
2 generations. It isn't like AMD where you retain the same socket over a lot more
generations.

I am looking to upgrade my chip processor. I have the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Socket LGA 1155 ATX Intel Motherboard I purchased in 2014-2015. What current Intel processors (at least 6th generation) can I replace? If there is a list available, let me know how I can get access to it. Thank you.
