I wish I could tell you either way, but I don't know. Broadwell users have not posted much in this forum, since there are only five Broadwell processors available, and three of those are Xeons.

The CPU Support list for the Z97E-ITX shows UEFI/BIOS version 1.70 needed to support Broadwell processors. Version 1.70 is no longer listed in the UEFI download list, which leaves version 1.80 as the necessary version for Broadwell:

Since the 1.80 UEFI version description includes a CPU microcode update, that indicates a Broadwell processor most likely would not POST without the appropriate UEFI version installed.

You cannot update the UEFI/BIOS if the CPU will not POST, or without a CPU in the board.

You should submit a Technical Support Request form with your question, including the ASRock board model. You can find the form in the link below:

If I buy a new Z97E-ITX I'm guessing it will have a BIOS version without Broadwell support. Will the board still boot up with an i5-5765c in order to flash the new BIOS? Or does it have to be flashed beforehand?
