X99 Extreme4 and RX480

I am scratching my head. Have had a x99 extreme4 for 2 years with a Core i7-5820 and XFX R9 280 GPU. Decided to update the system to a new CPU and GPU. I flashed the bios to the latest bios to support the i7-6800. Replaced the CPU and GPU but every time I launch a game, I get random system hangs (fairly quick under 10 minutes of play). Upgraded the power supply and monitored for thermal issues but did not find any. Does this mobo support the RX480? Bad GPU? I have tried the old XFX card and it is fine so the CPU is not an issue.

Any suggestions? TIA

You mentioned nothing about GPU drivers.

You should uninstall your current AMD/ATI driver, with the 480 in the board should be Ok. Then restart to PC, do not install the AMD GPU driver yet.

Once you restart and the built in Windows GPU driver installs automatically, download the GPU driver from the 480's website and install it. Restart the PC and see how it goes.

No idea what version of Windows you are using. You said you are now using a Broadwell-E CPU with compatible UEFI/BIOS version. But did you install the new version of the INF files and the Intel IME software for your processor?

First, what PSU and how old is it? The RX480 req's a decent 500w'er.

Since we don't know how loaded w/HW your system is, you can see if plugging a 4-pin mole direct from the PSU into PCIE_PWR1, just above and in the middle of the top PCIE1 slot.

The RX 480 uses significantly less power than the R9 280 so the PSU shouldn't be a problem with the 480 if it is working correctly with the 280.

Parsec's suggestion on the drivers is exactly what I was going to suggest. Both the GPU and INF drivers/utility should be reinstalled. If you have not already, clear CMOS with the new config all set up so you have a clean slate to work from and no remnant settings from the old setup. With a hardware change this significant a fresh OS install wouldn't be amiss. Try the driver reinstall first though.

If you still have issues after the driver remove and reinstall and/or OS clean install then take a look at your system events in event viewer. Make a note of the time a freeze occurs and check for any corresponding warnings or errors in your event logs. This should give you an idea of where the problem is coming from. If you see it is GPU or driver related then RMA that GPU. I made the mistake of hanging on to mine thinking it was just a driver issue and it turned out to be a bad/faulty VRM section. I am now stuck with the GPU...

If the issues clear up with the suggestions given here then you should be good to go. GPU related issues can be a pain to troubleshoot given how many factors there are at play.

Thanks all. More background. This is a fresh Windows 10 x64 install with all the latest drivers including the latest AMD GPU drivers.
System components:
Single video card (now XTX RX480), 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance RAM, Samsung M2 960 Pro, Dual WD Black 2 TB drives and 1 BluRay Burner and 1 DVD Super Drive. Was a Corsair HX750 PS but replaced when power was suspect with a EVGA 1000G.
Obviously this had no effect hence why I am here.

Thanks wardog, had no idea about the PCIE_PWR connector. Connect it but that also had no effect.
No indicators in the system event log other than unexpected shutdown.
Ran GPU-Z writing to a file and no smoking gun there either.

I have a ticket with XTX so I am waiting to hear from them.

Let us know what they say. By the sound of it the GPU could have a faulty boost control in either it's VBIOS or the VRM design. 

Is it a reference design RX 480? If it is reference design it could still be suffering from the early vBIOS bug that caused issues at launch (some lower end/older motherboards actually got fried).

This is the reference (XFX model) RX 480



If yours has a different cooler design then it isn't reference and is made after the date these issues had been resolved so wouldn't be the issue.
