I have just completed my first build of a computer from scratch. I am using an H97 motherboard. I have working knowledge, but I am no expert. Once I got the machine assembled, I started it; the fans run, the lights come on, but I get no signal to my monitor, and after exactly 60 seconds, the computer shuts down and restarts. Is there no troubleshooting system on this board? Every computer I've ever had before this had a blinking light system to assist in diagnosing problems. I have tried everything I know of to isolate the problem: I have tried to isolate memory sticks, I have reinstalled the processor, I have unplugged hardware, but nothing seems to fix it. Does anyone here more knowledgeable than I have any thoughts or suggestions on what the problem might be? At this point I am guessing that it is a bad motherboard. Thanks.

Could you provide a full list of system specs so we know what advice to give Wink

If you don't have one hooked up already make sure you connect a PC speaker to the motherboard, it should beep to inform you that post has completed or alternatively it will beep in a sequence that will identify where the problem is coming from. At this point I don't know if you are using a discrete GPU or the iGPU provided by the CPU etc so I will wait for your system specs.

Thanks for the info. Without a PC speaker you will have a very hard time troubleshooting, it is possible but will require a lot more effort to do. You can get PC speakers like this one for pretty cheap. That or pull one from another PC as they are not really needed unless you have a problem.

Beep codes can be found here

The PC shutting down after 60 seconds is actually a good sign, it means that the board and parts are working together enough for the board to control power off. Before you try and find a PC speaker you can try clearing CMOS as described here. The board may have at one time or another had a discrete GPU installed and onboard video disabled, clearing CMOS should correct this.

Followup-

Beep codes revealed a memory issue.  I swapped out my RAM sticks for others, and the computer started just great!  Thanks for your assistance.
