Other than freezing when you get a BSOD, what is the error listed? Such as the video driver etc..

After trying the steps suggested by Xaltar, if you wish to boot into Ubuntu, you should have 2 USB options in the UEFI Boot menu or the Boot override menu (keep in mind that I have a X370 board):

- USB: SMI USB DISK (for non UEFI flash boot --> this works on my system with Linux Mint)
- UEFI: SMI USB DISK (for UEFI boot --> this was required to load Windows 10 on my system)

The link I provided gives you the steps to make a UEFI USB bootable drive. I always use Rufus and gave up on other tools a long time ago...

I dont see the link

One more crucial detail, this must be done with Factory Defaults in your UEFI. Never apply your manual settings before you have installed your OS and the system is stable at defaults. This never used to be as much of an issue but UEFI is getting more and more fiddly as technology gets more complex/advanced.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forums.

When installing an OS on an X399 system it is best to remove all drives from the system leaving only your OS drive installed. Having other drives connected during the install process causes problems with the installation. This apples to both Windows and Linux.

Another step that would be beneficial is to completely remove all partitions from your OS drive before installing and let windows create and format the partitions it needs. If your other drives are new and have no data on them yet or you can back it up, remove their partitions too then repartition and format them once your OS is installed and updated.

Once your installation is complete and you have updated your drivers and windows you can then install your other drives. Doing all this will completely rule out the OS as the problem. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I didnt Rufus but i used a different usb tool making that cam from the linux top 7 recomended gaming distros for a bootable usb.I belive the app is called pen usb tool.Yes i used different usb ports brought two new usb thumb drives still a no go for linux.

Not sure what the proper UEFi settings Its currently set to ahci and iommu is disable in the bios

I find it odd that you managed to install Windows, but Ubuntu failed.

There's also a newer release: Ubuntu 17.10.1 (this branch was tested with Threadripper on a few sites)

Finally, you can test your PSU with a multimeter if you don't have access to a universal tester (even if you used the unit in a prior system).

Have you tried booting into Linux from USB or running Memtest?

yes expect for the memtest, but for some reason linux would go through the install process or fully run live.

Did Windows install without errors - clean install, right? How about Ubuntu errors?

windows did install without any errors.

Asfar as ubuntu i get the (initramfs) unable to find counting live file system.I experience this with (ubuntu,12.1,16.4,5.35) ,manjaro, lakka linux

Since you already tried a lot of things, I would probably swap parts out at this point and test everything one by one in another system, even the CPU if you have access to another X399 board.

unfortunatly this is the only working mb and processor that i have.

Hang in there, you have a great rig and you'll get it running Wink

thanks i just trying to figure out whats really the issue.
