I certainly hope it's not that, but that will be close to the only option if my final attempt doesn't work tomorrow: I'm replacing the RAM sticks entirely, as someone helpfully pointed out they weren't QVL listed and selecting from that list might make it work.

At one point I assumed the motherboard was defective, and have thus ordered a new one and have it on the way, so at least if that's the case I'll have an alternative at the ready.

I won't know for 100% sure until I receive a replacement X470 Taichi that I can test with my 3700x but it is probably safe to assume your issue is the same as mine. The motherboard is either defective or someone in the supply chain corrupted the bios trying to do an update. Either way an RMA is the only option if you are out of the return window with the retailer like I was.

This episode has reminded me why I always test all my electronics ASAP when they arrive. In this instance I wasn't able to do that because I am helping a friend build a system and I didn't have all the pieces necessary to test it within the return window. I promise that I will never to offer a friend help again unless they are willing to order everything necessary to test it within a certain time frame. I don't want to go through this fiasco again.

So UPDATE
After a lot of trouble, I got a setup that by all rights should be working. The setup is here:

Motherboard: ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate

You are correct. I shouldn't have posted my issue here since your issue is different than mine.

I love the fact that AMD decided to make their motherboards compatible with multi generations of CPUs. With that said AMD should have made it a standard that all motherboards had the ability to upgrade the bios without a CPU. I know this same issue can happen with Intel. I feel at this point we should be able to upgrade the bios on any motherboard without requiring a CPU. Even if that meant we had to replace the bios chip itself.

Anyway, my issue is a bad motherboard and that can happen to any manufacturer.

Your situation and symptoms are different beekermartin, in this case it appears
to be a simple case of an unsupported CPU (both of the ones tried). The 61 error
code is to do with RAM, more particularly, the system not recognizing the IMC on the
CPU because the BIOS doesn't support it. I suspect this is why AMD wanted to can
support for the 400 series and earlier with their next generation of Ryzen CPUs.
It can't be cost effective having to send out boot kits to everyone who needs them.

I am having the same no post issue with a Taichi X470. I have tried 3 CPUs that should work with any bios and all of them get the post code 00. With a 3700X installed I don't even get a post code. Needless to say I am RMAing the board. I am very frustrated and disappointed.

Thanks for everyone's help! At this point I returned all CPUs and I'm just going to get an R5 2600; I know that one works and I can deal with the lesser performance, it'll still be a big jump up from the FX 6300 I was using before.

The x570 Taichi has BIOS Flashback, it only took 2 generations
At least ASRock listen, eventually

second to what xaltar has advised you
stick to
1600/1700 etc etc WITHOUT the af code
or a normal 2nd gen ryzen 2600/2700x etc

All the 1000 series AFs are new too, if you look at the compatibility list I linked
you will see the 1600(YD1600BBM6IAF) requires BIOS version 3.9, the 1200 AF is
even newer than that.

AMD has really confused things with this AF situation. They are essentially 2000
series parts rebranded as 1000 series parts. Your best bet would be a non AF
1000 series or something like a 200ge.

You can also identify what BIOS your board shipped with by looking for the
white sticker on the BIOS chip, it will have a version number printed on it.

I am seeing issues like yours a lot lately, with AF parts being so cheap many
people are tempted to go with them and end up with the same issue.
