Intel SATA chipsets have never supported port multipliers. I've checked on this over the years several times for various chipsets in Intel's datasheets. This is from the X99 datasheet, which contains multiple references to SATA port multipliers and their related registers, etc. I copied the two lines below from that document: The PCH SATA controller does not support Port Multipliers.
