Hi all,

I just got a ASRock Z490M-ITX/ac motherboard and the 4x Toshiba MG07ACA12TE SATA 12TB do not show up on a cold boot.

They do not show in the BIOS and they do not show up in any OS that boots from a USB or M.2 NVMe SSD.

If the system is reset, either from an OS or by using the reset button, then the drives appear in the BIOS and are seen by OSs.

This is not an OS issue, as it happens with Windows, Linux and also in the UEFI bios.

The motherboard came with BIOS 1.20, I updated to BIOS 1.30 and the problem persists.

System Specs:
Motherboard: ASRock Z490M-ITX/ac
CPU: Intel Core i3 10100, S 1200, Comet Lake, 4 Cores, 8 Threads, 3.6GHz, 4.3GHz Turbo, 6MB Cache, 65W, Retail
Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i Low Profile CPU Cooler
Case: Fractal Design Node 304, Black, Mini-ITX Case
RAM: 16GB (1x16GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-21300 (2666), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 16-18-18-35, XMP 2.0, 1.2V
HDDs: 4x 12TB Toshiba MG07ACA12TE Enterprise Hard Drive, 3.5" HDD, SATA III 6Gb/s, 7200rpm, 256MB Cache
SSDs: 512GB Samsung 950 M.2 NVMe SSD
PSU: Corsair SF450 PSU.

Other info:
Nothing is inserted in the large PCIe slot.
Memory is in bank A, closest to the CPU.
I've built many PC's before.

Help!

I have emailed Toshiba (TAEC_SPBU_techhelp@taec.toshiba.com) and will post their reply, if I get one.

In the mean-time, if someone at ASRock could confirm the issue, give me any advice or a new beta BIOS to try that would be great.

Dear Dominicc,

Thank you for posting your query to the ASRock forum.

We have checked with the only Toshiba 12TB Toshiba MG07ACA12TE in our lab, however, we are not able to duplicate the problem.

Please try to connect one HDD at a time and add another if the system detects the HDDs properly.

If the problem persists kindly try to connect the 2 pcs of HDD per one SATA power connector to see if it will work.

Also, kindly try different SATA cables.

With thanks,
ASRock TSD

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I can confirm that:

1. Replacing *ALL* the SATA cables with brand new cables has no effect, same problem.
2. Using each drive by itself, one at a time, on port 1 has no effect, drive not detected.
3. Using each drive by itself, one at a time, on port 2 has no effect, drive not detected.
4. Using each drive by itself, one at a time, on port 3 has no effect, drive not detected.
5. Using each drive by itself, one at a time, on port 4 has no effect, drive not detected.
6. Using pairs of drives, on port 1 and 2 has no effect, drives not detected.
7. Using pairs of drives, on port 3 and 4 has no effect, drives not detected.
8. Using pairs of drives, on port 1 and 3 has no effect, drives not detected.
9. Using pairs of drives, on port 2 and 4 has no effect, drives not detected.

For the above tests, the unused drives were not connected to the SATA POWER *and* DATA.

What firmware does you drive have? Is it the same as mine?

Here's a link to a google photos album showing the system with 1 new SATA cable connected and the unused SATA power cables disconnected.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/zXAcaHaPpA7QkT7k6

Also, the original SATA cables can be seen on top of the system.

I also note that adding the NMVe to 5 port SATA adapter, as seen in the photo, had no effect on the cold-boot detection. This adapter was only installed *after* the original problem and is used for connecting additional storage devices (1x SSD + 1HDD).

I repeated the tests with it removed and there was no change.

I have just added a video to the google drives shared folder showing the system and the problem.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/zXAcaHaPpA7QkT7k6

The drives are *never* detected on cold boot, regardless of how they are powered or where they are connected. They are *always* *all* detected on a warm reboot, either via exiting the bios or by rebooting using ctrl+alt+del or by rebooting from within an OS.

Please advise.

Dear Dominicc,

Thanks for the reply.

The Toshiba HDD that we tested is also FW0101.

We have some more suggestions for you.
1. Please refer to the page. 21 to clear the CMOS.
   https://download.asrock.com/Manual/Z490M-ITXac.pdf
2. Please remove all of the storage devices only install the one Toshiba HDD and try.
3. If possible, please try with a different power supply.

If the problem persists, kindly contact the store where the motherboard was purchased for further assistance.

With thanks,
ASRock TSD
