Hello everyone,

As soon as I resume my system from Idle state, if I do run any program, game or file from my secondary SSD it goes 100% disk usage and system totally hangs.

Windows event log viewer shows the following:
Storahci, ID 129, Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued
ID 51, An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation (where Harddisk2 is my games ssd)

System (OC 4.5Ghz @1,360Vcore, XMP1 3000Mhz):
Intel Core i5 6600K
Asrock Z170 Extreme4
2x8Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000Mhz
Samsung 850EVO (os)
Crucial M500 (games)
1Tb WD Red (storage)
Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
EVGA Supernova GS 550W

WORKAROUND: (source)
By enabling "Adaptive" for HIPM and DIPM  in advanced power states I've been able to fix the issue, this wasn't a solution but a workaround because in this condition my hard drives won't go low power consuption anymore, and I don't want it for a long-term system.

SOLUTION: (source)
I've been able to fix this issue by setting "Hot-Plug" in Bios for all my SSD & HDD (Asrock Z170 Extreme4). This seems to be related to Windows10 and the new ACHI technology, hope it helps!

From accounts here on the forums the best BIOS version for your board would be 2.40. BIOS versions before and after seem to be problematic on some configurations. Try 2.40 and see if that resolves your issues.

Looking at the thread you linked on Toms as well as posts here on the ASRock forums it seems this is a very common issue. I have seen it mentioned that increasing the VCCIO to about 1.1 and VCCSA to about 1.15 seems to help in some cases. It may be worth giving it a try.

You can also try turning off XMP and running your RAM at 2133 to check for improved stability. From my reading on the subject it seems that the issue is coming from RAM and XMP in most cases.

I don't have a Z170 board to test with and my H170 does not allow for RAM speeds greater than 2133 so I have not run into any issues like this on my system.

Hello Xaltar,

seems like my problem isn't a proper hard lock. The system seems to work pretty fine, I can run as many stress test as I want, Prime95, Unigine Heaven, x264 stress test, RealBench, MemTest and many others, everything works just fine!

The problem happens totally random, may happen in game, may happen while watching a youtube video, but it's not a black screen or an hard lock, it's a deep stutter/hang I can solve only by rebooting/hard rebooting the system (and in this case system took 2 minutes to reboot). Also seems like the issue happens only after running games from my games ssd.

I have a very similar system and I have never experienced this stutter behaviour.

My computer has been used heavily for work everyday for the last 40 days and I occasionally play games too, just finished far cry.

We have the same memory, I could share my exact ram timings and voltages if it could help.

Hello Peroni, I just figured out the problem: I had to set "Hot-Plug" for all my Hard Drives and SSD in Bios, this fixed my issue! Smile

The solution is curious, but glad it works for you.

When you say "... after resuming my system from an Idle state...", do you mean coming out of Windows Sleep mode? Or Hibernate?

Did you have SATA Aggressive Link Power Management Enabled in the UEFI, Storage Configuration screen?

Do you know what process(es) go(es) to 100% after the resume? Or is it just the drive's IO that goes to 100%? I have seen what you have described very rarely after waking from Sleep. That could be a Link State power management issue.

Wake from Sleep bugs can be very strange. I had a PSU and video card combination that caused the video card to not be functional within a time period that Windows 7 deemed appropriate. The video card would then never start although its fan was running, as if Windows then did not allow it to start.
