I have an X399 Taichi with BIOS P3.90
I took out a failing 970 evo 2TB in M2_2 and put it in M2_3, and put a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB in M2_2

I was able to get the drive cloned from M2_2 to M2_3 after 3 attempts. ( 970 was having issues)

I now have Samsung 990Pro's in all three slots, and the BIOS and OS only see two of these. Both recognized 990 Pro's have the most recent firmware.

I am not using a U.2 drive, there is nothing plugged in there and it still has the rubber boot from the factory.

My issue, M2_1 does not see a 990 pro.

What should I do ?

I use 3 x 970 EVO Plus 2TB, I have no experience with 990 Pro but from what I can understand the problem may be the outdated firmware of the drive not recognized by BIOS, correct?

I have 3 - 990's. The two in M2_2 and M2_3 were recognized, and any updates applied by Samsung Magician. The M2_1 is not seen. Once I get the machine back up I can try the drive currently in M2_1 in m2_3 and see what happens.

I suspect there is some setting in the BIOS related to M2_1 or something along those lines, not the firmware on the drive. Suggestions ?

Yes, swapping the unrecognized 990 on different M2 ports would be a good start and see what happens.

What I have noticed in BIOS about storage is that there are no separate configuration options for each M2 port, so changes are applied to the storage system.

If after testing the M2 port swapping there are no positive results I would consider the possibility of defective 990 and if you want confirmation of failure on your X399 Taichi I would recommend opening an ASRock support request

Good luck and please let us know your findings

ok, I have swapped drives between m2_1 and m2_3. Slot m2_1 does not recognize either Samsung 990 pro drive. Both drives work in slot M2_3, and both drives have the latest firmware.

It looks like slot m2_1 is bad on my motherboard.

How do I go about RMA'ing the motherboard ?

Bad news

I have never requested RMA from ASRock.

I had a problem with the CPU mounting bracket (my bad, out of warranty) and using the link posted above they offered me to repair my X399 Taichi by paying the cost of shipping and replacement of the part.

I guess it will be useful for you too
