New system build december 2023:
- Asrock steel legend x670e (firmware 2.02 and latest ASRock drivers) - AMD ryzen 9 7900x - Gskill trident z5 neo cl30 6000 2x32gb non rgb - Samsung pro 990 4TB m.2 incl. newest firmware - windows 11 incl. update jan 12 2024 I can't get my MSI GTX 1070ti Gaming X or my EVGA GTX1070ti FTW2 to work in the pci 5.0 slot. I only can get my MSI GTX 1050ti to work in the pci 5.0 slot and do benchmarks. All cards work fine, incl benchmarks in the pci 3.0 slot and in my old i7 4770 system. The MSI 1070ti starts windows but crashes hard with benchmarks and just starting rocket league. Error messages with the MSI 1070ti are always the same loop - volmgr event 161 - kernel power event 41 (63) - event log 6008 The EVGA 1070ti doesn't even boot up windows, or show BIOS. Steel legend has red "boot" and "vga" LED's on when that happens. I've switched 3x 80plus gold powersupplies (730w, 750w, 1000w) thinking it might be inefficient power to the gpu's, but all 3 cards work fine in my old i7 4770 win10 system with the 730w and 750w psu's. The system works fine with the iGPU, cinebench 2024 and cinebench R23, rocket league (played for an hour) etc. BIOS settings: I've tried setting the PCIe x16 link speed from auto to Gen3, didn't solve the problem I've tried setting the PCIe/GFX lane configuration for x16 from auto to x8x8 and x4x4x4x4, but didn't solve the problem. I rechecked the manual which states the pci 3.0 slot is used for x4 (pci 3.0 16x) graphic cards. But the problem is I do not have room to put a big GFX card there since the PSU is in the way and this isn't a tiny case (BeQuiet pure base 600 silver midi tower). PCIe 5.0 should be backwards compatible, especially when I manually set it to GEN3 speeds but I think I might be erroneous here. I used to solve most of my computer problems back in the day but this one I do not understand yet. Any help is very much apreciated ! |

A friend suggested disabling "fast boot" but that didn't make any difference.
1. boot up using EVGA 1070ti in pci 3.0 slot 2. change bios settings "fast boot -> disabled" 3. boot long to windows, due to bios change 4. after boot restart from windows, boot is faster than step 3 5. change EVGA 1070ti to pci 5.0 slot 6. try to boot. No post, VGA led on steel legend x670e is red. But the boot led is not on. |

The EVGA card might need the NVidia firmware update: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/nv-uefi-update-x64/ Put the card back in the old system to run the firmware update check. The early 10xx series graphics cards used VBIOS, but need the newer GOP firmware before they will work with modern UEFI mode motherboards. |

Thanks, according to the NVidia firmware updater it was already up to date unfortunately on the EVGA 1070ti, same with the MSI gtx 1070ti I checked yesterday on the other system.
I can run the card fine in the pci 3.0 slot in the new system, outside the computer case, if you missed that info. I'm using the system right now. But not with the 1070ti in the pcie 5.0 slot. |

The MSI 1050ti worked right away first try in the pcie 5.0 slot, no problem. |

Wasn't there something about pci 3.0 goes straight to the CPU and the pci 5.0 goes via the chipset or the other way around ?

Might the difference be that the msi 1050ti just goes to a maximum of 4gb of Vram but the 1070ti's go further to 8gb of Vram ?
Maybe that's why the msi 1070ti works in the beginning, but instantly crashes when giving it work to do (benchmark, gaming). The EVGA 1070ti handles it memory different or somethign sop it doesn't work from the startup in pcie 5.0. I'm just wildy guessing. I just want this system to work as I intended so I've just ordered an RTX 4060ti 16gb, which will be here in 3 days. If that card works fine in the pcie 5.0 slot I will be totally flabbergasted. If not, this mobo must be a defective one and I'm back to the shop the next day. |

The only other thing I can think of is to check if there is an option to set the motherboard PCIE5 slot to use PCIE3 in the BIOS/UEFI.
You would not lose any transfer speed because the 10xx cards use PCIE3. |

Here is a post by someone with the same motherboard, they had graphics card issues starting in BIOS version 2.0 but earlier versions worked better for them.
Not sure if you have tried one of the earlier versions. https://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=27061&title=blank-screen-whern-cold-booting-with-2-0-and-2-02 |
