Yea. You certainly chose an option laden motherboard to learn on.

Hot swap is very drive dependent. Best you probably use it as a removable drive and remove it like you would a USB drive, from the taskbar.

Thank you for the help. So avoid asmedia sata ports if possible unless it's for a file server. Do you know if the advanced storage configuration settings matter much? I notice default sets the sata ports to hard disk drive, should I worry about changing to ssd? And should I make sure hot swap is on for the hot swap port to the top of the case or does it really affect anything? This has been first pc I built by individual parts and this motherboard has been full of options for a first timer.

Everything else works after plugging all in. Was just the sata ports configuration. Went through some loops when I should have stuck with my first assumption.    but do appreciate the help and assistance to say the least    that looks like a kiss symbol but I picked the star so if it's a kissing star I just meant a star lol

SATA3_A# 's are the ASMedia SATA Controller ports. They are most likely NOT compatible with ODDs.

They're also slow as all get out as far as SATA speeds are concerned. If you expect or need speed from a drive stick to the non-A ports.

If it's a file server the ASMedia ports work just great.

Must have been the sata ports after all. I changed sata3_a2 to sata3_5 which was optical drive. Going to reconnect the usb devices one at a time and see if that was the only problem this whole time.

And I also have a 3.0 usb connector that goes to the case which has roughly 4 usb ports. Going to try to disconnect that and see if it makes it further. Tempted to just run virtual but would rather have a dedicated hard drive for Linux and can't find the option to enable the hard drive to the virtual session in its entirety

By booting into the live mode it should at least boot even if one of the sata plugs were disabled but I'm confident I got that part figured out. Biggest issue probably has to do with the uefi options and the xhci usb handoff options but I've tried both ways and even reset bios to default and tried. I do have a wifi/Bluetooth pcie that gets power from the usb port on motherboard
