My X370 Taichi does this. With all CPU-related stuff left on auto, I get Vcore spikes (guys here claim normal) and bad idle temps both in UEFI and Win 10.

dunno if its normal, but running 4.1ghz on all cores requires much less voltage than what bios puts on its own with cpb enabled

Not sure, but my understanding is that it's not uncommon. I had my ASRock 970M Pro3 do the same thing (my Phenom II was at roughly 40C in BIOS even though in idle it was only slightly above ambient) and was told that it's nothing to worry about. Either the BIOS stresses the CPU on purpose, or uses a temperature offset for the CPU on purpose so that even if you had installed the cooler poorly, the CPU should always stay stable in the BIOS.

The question is what is the max temperature your CPU gets to in daily use? It's probably well below what your CPU hits in OCCT, so it should be fine. Personally I would like the CPU to stay below 75C under stress testing, even though that figure is supposedly safe, but it seems like that's not going to happen with the standard cooler if I want to push this 1500X beyond 3700 MHz. It's surprising that the 1600 is running even as cool as it is, maybe I need to reseat my CPU cooler...

My AB350M Pro4 did this too. Vcore was all over the place and the frequencies were odd as well. The 1500X is supposed to be 3.5GHz/3.7GHz at stock and I was seeing 3.6GHz/3.8GHz, voltage spikes well beyond 1.4 V and power consumption of slightly over 70W in Prime95 (according to HWMonitor). Now that I've set a manual overclock to 3.7GHz @ 1.25V, HWMonitor shows Vcore staying just below 1.3V, clock speeds are where they're supposed to be and power consumption in Prime95 seemed to drop by a watt or two.

I guess it's normal, but it also feels like the quality of the auto settings are subpar. I mean, surely after all these years, controlling Vcore is no longer a mystical art for motherboard makers.

I guess it's mostly due to AMD's push to launch Ryzen as early as possible. I truly hope platform will mature (AGESA, UEFI, Win, etc.), hopefully sooner than later.

Heck, HP are still pushing errata updates for my old AMD Llano laptops...

Another crazy thing - if you look here https://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp?cat=BIOS, you'd see all Intel mobos getting much love from ASRock now, while AMD ones get none. Maybe Intel pays ASRock to stall AMD updates? Given Intel's previous practices it wouldn't surprise be a bit. Or maybe ASRock FW team are now busy with Intel's cr@p? IDK honestly. At this stage all I'm left with is waiting and ranting here and there...

i get nowhere near that even at 3.9 ghz and 1.325 v

two front 120mm fans and two rear 120mm fans (both set to low speed)
and the noctura am4 heatsink fan circa £50/$50/50E

in fact my heatsinkl and fan never activate to boost speed over 1000 rpm

this is even the case when i stress test the system with multiple benchmarks and stress tests at same time

Have you tried running that setup with the stock cooler?

nope just two other r5 1600's in msi tomahawks at 3.8 ghz, hence the first part of reply saying not be trouble at that speed and volts

the stock 1600 cooler is getting quite famous for being a dam good freebee

Do you remember what temperatures they were hitting? OP is staying below 80C @ 3.8GHz, which is in my opinion in line with Hardware Unboxed's results in the Wraith Spire cooler vs Cooler Master 212 -comparison. In that comparison the 1600 hit 89C @ 4GHz & 1.4V in Aida 64's stress test with the Wraith Spire. At stock it hit 63C. It's worth noting that Aida's stress test should be a bit lighter on the CPU than OCCT, which the OP is using.

It just occured to me that if we consider the limit to be 95C, then the OP is indeed not having any issues keeping the CPU (relatively) cool. I just don't think going near those temperatures is good for the CPU in the long run, it's a big temperature delta compared to ambient...

It's a good freebee, no doubt, especially compared to what Intel offers. However, I think this says more about the quality of stock coolers than the Wraith Spire itself.
